The variety of uses for the beloved Beetle are pretty endless it seems.
This particular machine has obviously been altered a wee bit
as the factory never produced such a thing.
While not a factory conversion, it was at least done by an extension of Volkswagen
being converted at a US based Volkswagen dealership back in the late 50's or early 60's.
The car is a 1955 model, an "early Oval" as they call them
(but obviously without the distinctive Oval rear window now)
The before photos it the scrapbook show the car as found in its original red
paint and faded Highland Motors logos on the doors.
It was obviously in rough shape but very complete.
The interesting blend of Beetle and Bus parts are visible in these shots.
What a super cool creation!
The story is that the dealership built it from a damaged Beetle for use as a local parts hauler.
The logos on the doors were a great advertisement for the dealership as well.
Certainly an eye catcher wherever it went. I don't know when it was eventually parked
or just how long it sat, but it was obviously rescued and now has been completely restored
into probably far nicer shape than it ever was back in the day..
This was a full body off restoration that was done to a very nice standard.
Good clean floorpans and solid metalwork.
Very clean underneath
Lookking deep you can see some of the cuts and blends that
were a part of its conversion to a truck. Not flawless factory level fabrication but
very sound and solid. The big grey bars here in this shot are for the tow hitch by the way.
Some detail shots of inner structure
Front axle bean and surrounding metal
Inner fender shows some cracking to the finish.
Drum brakes all the way around
Bullet front signals
Spare tire well
VW logo mudflaps
The rear bumper is a modified vw bus unit from a 1958 or earlier model.
There is a spot of paint loss near this one bolt. Not a difficult thing to touch up.
Engine number on the 36 horse case comes up as a 1960 production model.
Chrome is bright and clean, lenses and body seals look good.
36 horse engine is a good runner and driver
Very clean and well detailed.
