1961 VW Double Cab Transporter For Sale
The split screen Double Cab is one of the most desirable
models of the "working class" VW Bus.
Early models such as this 1961 model with the bullet front signals
are pretty hard to find.
This truck has been a labor of love project for its owner for the past 3 years or so.
Its received a nice driver quality restoration during his ownership
with the goal of making something clean, reliable and solid.
It shows well but is no "concours queen".
I'd give the paint and body probably a 7 out of 10 with 10 being top level.
It looks great though and will definitely bring smiles and comments wherever it goes.
The truck has all its original tags and numbers in place which is always nice to see.
Decoding the "M Code Tag" tells the story well.
Built on Valentines Day 1961 and painted in the best color ever, Dove Blue.
Originally delivered to the port of Philadelphia
Looking at the California plates on the truck it has been on the West Coast since probably the 80's.
Engine room tag matches up
As does the body number stamping near the battery
Correct "hump back" front seat
Interior panels are correct as is the seat material.
Correct 15" wheels with grey painted hubcaps.
Proper stock round mirrors
Good lookin old truck!
Nose is nice as are the proper "slash" bumpers.
All new window, door and body rubber from Wolfsburg West
Custom made canopy rack, very strong, can hold a canoe at speed!
195/75/15" tires in very good condition.
Gates are solid and sound but not flawless.
Rear fender wells were cut at some point in the past but have been
repaired with the proper metal.
Interior paint is original on the truck which is awesome!
The fuel gauge was added at some point (and is currently non-functional)
Love the radio block off plate
(but it does have and exterior antenna...)
Taillights are the correct 1961 or earlier models.
This area was also repaired after larger taillights were installed in the past.
Again, done correctly with the proper metal and quality welding.
Nice to see the proper "slash" pointed bumpers front and rear.
Nice gentle wear on the dash paint definitely gives the truck some soul,
Love that rack!
Good solid bed.
Clean but not so flawless that you would be afraid to use it as a truck!
Nice to see small correct details such as the black latches on the vent wings.
Blue California commercial plate
Cool trailer hitch as well.
Approx 10,000 miles on the rebuilt 1600cc single port engine
3,000 miles on the rebuilt big nut transmission.
Rebuilt carburetor by Volksbitz
German fuel pump rebuilt by William Fowler.
12 volt electrics with Optima battery
Roof panels look awesome and that original paint still shines well.
The rear hitch is a very stout set up
The lower edge of the bumper blade was trimmed, but you have to be on the ground to see it.
Good gaps
Rockers are solid
Divider wall also original paint.
Here is a pic during restoration showing the under bed area behind the fuel tank.
Fender well shot
Correct rear seat and pedestal
Small repaired area in the front wheel house but it looks like
its always been a pretty solid old truck.
Seat spring and frame detail
Excellent
Cool old driftwood looking shift knob
Nice to see the floors solid with the rubber mat removed
Day/night mirror was added at some point
Proper double cab pop out latches
Front kick panels look great
I love seeing that original finish on the frame...nothing to hide!
Doors are solid as well
Here is a shot with the engine removed..,.pretty clean!
Under the rear seat storage area
All in all this is really a great truck.
It looks like it has always been a pretty solid old hauler and
I applaud the owner's approach to it to keep as much originality as possible
but giving it a good facelift with new paint and rubber as well as fixing
the bigger issues such as the fender wells and taillights.
That paint and body is not flawless of course, and as you sight across it you can see some
waves and wiggles in spots, but overall it looks to be a very good honest example
that with its rebuilt engine , trans and suspension, will be a reliable
and enjoyable family and stuff hauler for generations to come.
