1965 Type 3 Karmann Ghia For
Sale
SOLD!
One of the rarest models of VW
in the 1960's in the US is this...the Type 3 Karmann Ghia..
These were never officially
imported to the US, however some did make their way in through Canada
and through independant owners and importers, but the numbers are very
few and it is quite rare to come by one
at a VW even or on the roads of America.
This is a 1965 model, which
falls pretty much right in the middle of production of these cars.
It is located in Florida in the hands of a collector with several other
VWs...so it is in good hands
and has been well treated.
The restoration work was done
prior to the current owner getting it, but he has done a ton of work to
make it
as nice as it can be, including replacing many parts and re-doing the
whole interior.
These cars bring about some
very interesting comments on the road...most folks dont know what the
heck it is.
A common guess is that it is a Corvair, or a BMW of some sort.
If it were not for the VW logos on it, you could tell people almost
anything and they might believe it.
"Oh yes...it is a 1965 Bertone Especialle GT, one of two in the whole
world and once owned by the Crown Prince of Kenya!"
Now this one has been modified
from original just a bit, mostly in the suspension and wheel
department...
They didnt normally come this low!
The front end styling is just
awesome on these cars...this is seriously one of my favorite VW models.
Chrome looks decent...all the
lights and lenses are nice.
There are a few ships and
scratches in the paint like these chips on the leading edge of the hood.
The front apron is a bit
scratched up
A bit of minor rust in the
corner perhaps just peeking out from below the finish.
You can see it along the edge
here a bit better...
The wheels are "wide 5" alloys
that have been wonderfully detailed...fully polished and painted and
excellent rubber.
Antenna ball? Check!
The window rubber is a bit dry
and unfortunately finding replacement rubber is very difficult...so you
are probablye best just living with it.
The interior on this car is
all new and it looks awesome!
Check out the red trimmed dash and panels and the Empi wood GT wheel.
Door panels are tastefully
done in two tone to match the seats.
Seat upholstery is in dark red
tweed with vinyl accents.
Coco mats help trim out the
interior and protect the red rugs.
The rear luggage rail is a
neat accessory not commonly seen on these cars.
Headliner is all new and
nicely fitted.
Front trunk is well trimmed in
carpet.
Raer trunk is similarly
trimmed.
Stock dual carb 1500cc engine
runs very good.
Bottom of the engine looks
nice and clean.
Floor pans show a bit of crust
in the back corners.
A little crusty but certainly
not terminal.
The battery is holding firm, etc...so it is functionally fine...just
not looking sweet from below.
Looks to be a recently
replaced master cylinder...
Brake lines look new...heater
is hooked up.
In closing this is a very
uncommon and extremely cool looking vehicle.
It runs and drives excellent and is well sorted.
The body and chassis have minor issues but the overall look is very
attractive and clean.
If you want to turn some heads at the next event...this car will do it!
