1959 Westfalia Hearse Trailer

Now here is a first for us at Oldbug.com...and probably one of only a handful in the world today,
an original Westfalia Hearse Trailer!
Westfalia not only made great camping interiors for VW's, they also produced
a long line of trailers and other equipment. This particular trailer was built for a small town in Germany
as a budget minded way to haul the deceased on their last ride.
Im not sure what sort of vehicle they would have used to tow it originally ( I sure can imagine an old black Mercedes
or better yet an old VW Bus), but the design has a very similar look to the Bus body.
the triler is pretty lightweight and could easily be hauled by a Bus (and would look amazing behind the Type 3 Hearse we have advertised!)

The trailer was imported by a California VW collector a few years back and then carefully restored
to the condition you see here. It is thought to be the only one in the US of this model.
The aluminum beltline trim looks like miniature version of the Deluxe trim on the split screen Busses.
I have seen photos of one painted two tone and converted for camping use behind a Bus in the UK...pretty awesome!

The side windows have etched palm leaf designs and the rear doors open up "barn door style"

The interior is pretty spartan with only a sliding platform to assist in loading of caskets.
Ultimate hauler for "body parts" for the next swap meet...in fact the previous owner was using it for just that
when it was located in Germany. He hauled his swap meet treasures to the show and then camped in the trailer
at night. Its a good size for such a thing...not too big and not too small.

A storage shelf above the cargo area gives a nice spot for the spare wheel and tire and whatever else you might want to stash.

The bocy, chassis and floor are all very very solid on this trailer...very well preserved.

Doors close one at a time like the side doors on a pre67 Bus.

Here you can see the height of it a little better...thats a single cab truck towing it.

Two tone taillights and the aluminum plate light housing are correct Westfalia trimmings and are in very nice shape.

Paint quality is very nice and those nice smooth fenders sure are beautiful.

Good tires on the proper steel wheels with the Westfalia logo hubcaps.

Here's the hitch set up...note the parking brake handle on the backside...looks familiar eh?
The braking mechanism is really cool on this...as you stop, the forward pressure of the trailer on the hitch
engages the brakes on the trailer. Its a simple affair...and it works great.

Here are the tags on the hitch.

If you are looking for something truly unique...the ultimate rarest of the rare accessory for your collection...
this is a very sweet find. An amazing find, excellent condition, useful for many purposes and a load of fun to scare the neighbors with!
