1954 Deluxe Beetle Sedan..Rare Canadian Car
This is a Canadian Oval...OK...big deal right? It came from Canada...
But in the early days of VW in Canada the cars were far between.
Remember that VWof America didnt come into play until 1955...
This particular car remained in Canada it's whole life until just recently
when it was imported to the US.
It resides in sunny California now.
It has had only three owners since new and is thought to be a very low
mileage example.
Unfortunately the service records are gone making it difficult to establish
just how many miles are on it.
It has been repainted once, the original color being "Ultramaroon",
now a nice bronze color.
The interior has been redone and a few parts changed over the years but
it still retains it's original numbers
matching engine and all original body panels.
Neat looking car and with the fun accessories that have been added it makes
it even more unique.
Here is the Volkswagen of Canada body tag.
The Birth Certificate showing date of production and delivery as well as
the options.
The most interesting option noted is M 107 Ram Protection
Perhaps someone can shed a little light on this but it appears to me that
Ram Protection refers to the US Spec
style "Towel Rail" Bumpers. Now as far I know...these werent
introduced until 1956...but if this is what it apears to be
this is the earliest Towel Rail bumper car I have ever seen.
I am open to people's thoughts on this...
The letters here establish also that the original engine is still with
the car...an amazing thing indeed.
And here is the number to prove it.
The engine is very clean and runs well. The owner states that it is a little
tired
but it rans smooth during my inspection and looks very presentable indeed.
The firewall material looks to have been changed out and is nice and clean.
Bottom side of engine lid looks great as well...original rear apron in
place.
The interior is very clean and while the material is not the original,
it does have
a bit of a nostalgic feel to it.
The dash features the proper "bat wing" steering wheel and a
very neat period radio and compass.
Seats are stitched in the proper early stitch design but the material is
incorrect...yet somehow looks great still.
Rear seat is clean as well...seat belts have been installed for safety.
Nice rear window blinds, col wicker picnic basket, luggage area still has
the metal rails in place.
Headliner is clean.
Single visor.
The tires on the car are original Volkswagen of Canada tires!
The sidewalls are a bit cracked but they are so incredibly cool...I dont
think I would take them off.
Note the VW logo design along the edge...really neat.
Proper wheels painted two tone with painted center caps.
Great accessory headlight visors.
Ski racks
Base for the racks is home built but sturdy.
Note some paint bubbling on the rear apron.
Heart taillights...one of the coolest lights ever made.
Ooops...its got a dent...apparantly done by the original owner's wife.
Original early fenders
Awesome vintage bug screen...too cool.
Very rare accessory item...perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but for true
VW wackos like myself...this thing is awesome!
Semaphore turn signals are a great attribute of the early cars.
Nice scratch guards under the handles.
Body is nice and straight.
Window rubber and glass is all very nice.
Correct early wipers.
Brass windshield washer nozzle is interesting.
Clean under the hood...note the matching Volkswagen Canada tire for the
spare.
Large mouth fuel tank.
Wiring cover and washer bottle pouch.
Hood is the correct one for the car.
Looks pretty clean and straight in here.
Not bad indeed.
Under the front apron
Now at first glance the floorpans look super scruffy, but under close inspection
they are anything but.
The undercoating applied in Canada was done by hand and is quite thick,
but it has done an amazing job of keeping the car solid.
Lift the carpets and you will see super clean and solid pans. The car is
really solid and rust free.
Looks spooky eh...I agree but lets look up top real quick and see what
is really going on...
The pans are super solid and clean !
Underside of the engine and original split case trans.
Single tip exhaust. (and mudflaps!)
In closing this is a pretty neat car. A desireble early oval with a twist.
Be the only one in the crowd with a Canadian 54 and wow them with the funky
goodies at the same time.
