1965 Volkswagen 1500 S Notchback "Survivor"

Here's a real treasure, an all original very well preserved, 1965
VW 1500 Notchback sedan
with only 23,000 original miles!

This car was produced in the September/October period and has had
only 4 owners from new.

Simply amazing!
Everywhere you look you see 100% original VW items, VW accessory
mud flaps, original hubcaps,
and a straight as an arrow "virgin" body with one L 87 pearl white
respray.

Really this one one of the finest "survivor" Notchbacks I've seen
in a long time, let the photos speak for
themselves, as new trunk liner, I can't believe that it's 52
years old.

Wrapped up in that German cloth bag is a factory delivered tool
kit.

Super clean in the tire well/brake fluid filler area.

Gas filler pipe and factory jack all like new, but
unrestored things like this on a car only look
this good once, you can tell this car was babied since new.

Factory data plate and gasoline reminder to use only high
test or premium.

Everything's looking really good in that factory mounted door
mirror.

Door panels are amazing , just a few light marks.

The door panels are 52 years old, I didn't believe it
either.

Original perforated white vinyl headliner, with working dome light
and rear passenger grab
handle.

What I can't get over is the all original German checked grey seat
material, all intact and in perfect condition.

Attention to details, seat bases are super clean and all
adjustable, the 1500 was the luxury VW
combining comfort and great styling.

Dashboard paint and pad are also well preserved, as are all
switches too.

What an amazing car, seeing a European Delivery car this old and
in this near dealership perfect
condition is a real treat.

All the rubber matting and hand brake boot etc. Are like new, this
car was garaged nearly all of it's life.
(Look at that seat material, that's 52 year old German quality!)

Car has original ignition and door keys.

23,270 actual miles!

Fantastic original German chrome door handle and window crank on
the well preserved door panels.

Look at that original headliner, all vintage Volkswagen, I love to
see them preserved
like this.

Under dash, super clean and 100% original.

Floor matting is in great shape, along with the original grey
carpeting.

Rubber matting in the floor pedal area looks super clean.

Very difficult areas, like the floor matting and the carpet in the
corners where the heater ducts are,
are very clean and well preserved.

Rear side panels are like new.

A perfect original back seat.

And a perfect original arm rest.
(I really can't believe how well this car was preserved for 52
years, unreal.)

Original factory "popouts" that were used, chrome shows some age
pits/markings which are common
for these pieces open to air and moisture.

Clean and classy.

Key's to the castle.

Original European taillights with the orange turn signal segment
at the top, yes
this car was ordered "new" from Frankfurt, a Grey Market
car, but more about that story later.

The headlights have been freshly restored with 6 volt
halogen light bulbs added.

Bright and safe 6 VOLT headlights.

The "S" model, top of the line for the Notchback in 1965!

Rear trunk mat and space are clean enough to eat breakfast out of.

Paintwork and metal are amazingly preserved on this car, I can't
stop raving about it.

Oil goes here.

License plate light and deck lid locking mechanism details.

Engine hatch cover is fantastic condition , hatch covers on
85% or more of the cars out there are destroyed,
this one is almost like new.

No English spoken here..

The Aluminum insulation hatch covering, while not perfect is
intact and doing it's job after 52 years.

Wow!
When was the last time you saw a 1500 S motor all there and
completely original?
Motor has a freshly rebuilt factory fuel pump with correct 5mm
lines.

Underneath it's as clean and original as up top, no leaks, no
mess, some surface rust, but no issues.

So let's talk about this cars colorful history..

A 69 year old woman living with her daughter in Darien,
Connecticut needed a nice stylish, but economical
car to replace her old beat up Mercury, her daughter was a
Registered Nurse for a Airline company who flew
regularly to Germany, where after making the decision to order the
1500 VW sedan, a car that was in the
middle class field, with a larger motor and more storage
and passenger space.
(it also wasn't available to the U.S.A. market, so the ladies had
to buy it directly from a German dealer.)
The car was ordered in Frankfurt and then shipped via cargo ship
to New York, where in October 1964
the two ladies picked the car up and drove it back home.
It was her daily driver and she owned it for 28 years.
Even at 90 years old the lady didn't give up the car, she didn't
drive the car anymore legally,
but she drove it in and out of the garage and around the front of
the house to keep the car running
and mechanically fit.
One year after the woman passed away (1993) the daughter
sold the car..

..To a man who owned a Heating Oil business who serviced that
woman's home and upon seeing
a for sale sign on the car in the driveway, he bought it. (in
Stamford)
It was at that time all original with the factory paint, the man
owned it from 1993 to 1997.
Within those 4 years the car had been driven only four times,
sitting most of it's time
covered up in a garage.
The man sold it to a VW repair shop in New Hampshire with 23,073
original miles.
There it was serviced and sold to a man in Jacksonville, Florida..

..The new owner in Florida repainted the car, the original L87
pearl white.
(In 1998, back when very few people cared about factory
originality.)
The car was kept in a private collection and barely ever
driven, 17 years later he sold it to the latest owner,
a gentleman living in San Diego, California, who has owned it for
the past 2 years.

The car has been driven 197 miles in the past 17 years!

What lovely lines the Notchback has.

Well how can I come to a conclusion about this car?
It has to be one of the most correctly preserved 1965 1500 S
Notchback cars in the world.
A perfect color combo of L87 Pearl White with Grey German Check
interior.
An original 1960's "Grey Market" car ordered directly from a
German dealer , as the Notchback was not available in the
United States.
A known history since day one, loved by two families and by two
professional collectors.
If you always wanted a Notchback, here you can buy the best, a car
which will bring great
enjoyment and also a sound investment.
