1960 Ragtop Beetle Sedan - 1970's "Cal Look" Style

This is one of the coolest VW's Ive ever had the opportunity to photograph.
There is something about this Beetle that really does it for me.
Firstly the quality of it is just plain impressive, and then the theme behind it, in trying to
re-create the classic Cal Look days of the 1970's is so well executed that it almost seems effortless.

Its a subtle car, it's not in your face with a bright color or crazy graphics.
A lot of restraint was used during it's construction...keeping it simple isnt as easy as it sounds.

The body and paint is excellent, truly top notch stuff.
The color is the legendary "British Racing Green"
fresh from the Jaguar color charts and sprayed in Glasurit single stage (nothing but the best).
Paint credits go to Jimmy Braxmeyer in Vista California.

The car started out as a total virgin, never hit rust free original with ALL the original body panels.

The fit and finish of everything is absolutely top notch and the owner spent countless hours and a whole lot of money
sourcing original German parts for everything he could. This was a true labor of love and the attention to detail
is far beyond the majority of the cars out there.

The headlight rings are original German ones that have been re-chromed
and the Porsche headlight lenses are NOS Bosch units.

Turn signal housings were re-chromed as well and new lenses and seals.

The original 4 tab hood remains with the car and the flatter style emblem is proper for 1960.
Note the stainless steel body trim here as well.
Look closely at these detail shots to see just how nice this paint is.

Slide back ragtop sunroof to let in the rays.
Nicely polished rails and screws, details abound everywhere you look.

Stayfast Canvas sunroof cover in tan looks great against the British Racing Green finish.

NOS pop out windows were found and installed in the car.

Very cool bullet style mirrors on each side are a very sweet nod to the 70's style.

The original ET mag wheels are very rare these days and these were professionally restored and detailed
and truly look like new.

The fat tires out back.

Aluminum T bar bumpers have been highly polished to a jewelry shine.
Taillights were complete rebuilt and restored.

California year of manufacture plates with Crest Motors plate frame from nearly Escondido
Current registration and clean title.

Kymco 1 1/2" header with hideaway muffler, creamic coated of course.

Mirror finish down the sides.

Aluminum running boards are a slight deviation from the 70's look but they are well fit
and look great.

Under the front hood is beautifully painted and detailed as well.

I love seeing cars that have had this level of paintwork done

Wiring is all new and well fit.
Spare tire well area is impeccable...again, this was a good virgin "never hit" example before the restoration.

Yummy.

Original aprons front and back, nicely detailed hood latch.

Fuel tank is gorgeous and the cap has been very cleanly polished.

Wiriring cover has been covered in a tweed material to match the headliner in the car.

Underside of the hood is excellent.

No hammer marks or signs of any repairs.

Lets crawl under the car for a while now and see what is going on down here.
This was a complete body off restoration by the way.
The front beam is a 3 inch narrowed unit from Franklin's with new king and link pins, powder coated arms and
new tire rods, reconditioned spindles and more. Custom shock towers and a special adaptation to run a steering dampener as well.

Wide 5 disc brake kit helps stop the car far better than stock.

Fender wells were treated to a nice coal of glossy paint as well and the hardware all replaced with stainless fasteners.

z
Chassis was painted in a "Hammertone" finish and is in superb condition.

The Hammerton gives it the texture you see here, it is a durable finish and ads a little fashion to the underbelly.

Spring plate details...

The transmission is freshly built by KCR with a 3:88 ring and pinion, super diff, aluminum side plate, welded third and fourth
gears and hardened keys. The gears are stock ratio from a 68 type 1 and still runs short axles. Gene Berg hardened rubber mounts
and a Joel Mohr Racing front trans brace and torque brace from Underdog Racing.
Stainless steel hard brake lines plumbed from front to back and of course all new brake componenets.

Check out the CB Performance deep sump and the oiling system.

Another shot of the exhaust....

OK...under the hood the engine is perhaps not the dual carb monster you would first expect but let me lay out the
details and you will see it is much more than meet the eye.

Displacement is 1915cc and the engine was built by Jason Lauffer at VW Paradise.
The case is a new AS 41 that has been full flowed. Counterweighted crank (freshly polished)
Stock rods (balanced) all new bearings, Engle 110 cam, Scat 1:25 rockers, Web Racing lifters
solid shafts with swivel foot adjusters, 040 Dual Port heads, 13lb flywheels and Kennedy 1700 clutch and solid disc.

Sweet Gene Berg oil filler/ breather.

p
Weber 40idf carb on a CB Performance low rise center mount manifold

12 volt alternator with Competition Engineering pullies.

The bottom pulley is very cleanly polished.

Original apron of course.

Billet aluminum deck lid riser.

Botom side of the engine lid.

Back outside and staring at the pretty stuff.
Now lets crawl inside and see what's going on there.

The interior of this car is as cool as the exterior...great 70's style and top quality workmanship and materials.

Seats are from a Porsche 924, modified to fit on the factory VW tracks.
Perfectly sized for the car and very comfortable and very well stitched in brown vinyl and tan tweed.

Rear seat upholstered to match. Seat belts at all seating points.

Tweed headliner is nicely fit.

OK...I found a flaw...no sun visors.

Dashborad is gorgeous and totally stock with the exception of the accessories.

Mahogany GT wheel with Wolfsburg Cresh horn push.

Clear needle speedo looks like brand new.

Cigar style ashtray (un-fouled of course)

Cool period look guage panel with VDO instrumentation.

Synthetic carpets and the proper rubber mats.
Pedal assembly has been complete restored.

Period correct Hurst trigger shifter.

Door panels stitched in the factory style pattern but in brown vinyl and tan tweed.

Empi door pulls.

Excellent detailing around the latches and such.
A lot of the super sweet details about this car are the ones you dont see. Like the door handles for an example.
Not satisfied with the aftermarket stuff or re-chroming the originals, the owner sourced out
NOS 1960 only units for the project. Throughout the car there are parts like this, switches and hardware, etc.
This guy went nuts with getting it right...and the proof is in the finished product.

Check out the reflection down the sides.

In closing this is simply a beautifully done car.
The quality is at a level with the top resto shops out there and the attention to detail is commendable.
Plus the style factor in my opinion rates very high. It's unique, it's timeless, and it is really really nice.

The price in my opinion is simple a bargain.
This quality restoration would run you upwards of $40,000 in the top shops, and that wouldnt include
the rare perior wheels and accessories or the performance drivetrain. All you gotta do with this one is turn the key.

If I had the greenbacks lined up, this one would be in my garage. it's bitchen!

Asking just
$24,750 obo
