1950 VW Beetle For Sale

This 1950 Deluxe Beetle is located in New Jersey.
This is an original "Hoffmann" car, meaning it was shipped when new from VW to New York
to the first importer and distributor in the US.
The cool factor of that is that it is one of the first VWs to officially be sold to the US market.

VW of America and its network of dealerships didn't form until 1955
prior to that the cars either came through Hoffmann or were brought into the states privately.

This example is a bit of a survivor, mostly unrestored and showing its age,
but it remains a very solid and correct intact original with its original numbers matching engine
and all the original sheet metal...which is pretty rare for these cars.

Its been repainted long ago and has had other areas painted again to fix damage and such.
Its a bit patchwork in the finish department with slightly off shade panels such as the decklid and rear fender.
Its certainly cool as it is, but if someone wanted a show car, it would all have to be redone.

A birth certificate was ordered by a previous owner way back in the 1980s.
The car has been collector owned over the past 40 years and its current owner
went to great lengths and expense to get the car dialed in and fitted with all the correct parts.

A few new parts have been installed under current ownership such as
new bumpers and brackets, but the originals have been retained.
More importantly things like the original rear fender remain in place
with the proper stampings and details .

Small crack on the lower edge of the passenger side rear fender.

The floorpans and chassis are remarkably solid for an east coast car
and while surface rust is present, there are no signs of rust perforation or repairs
according to the owner who has spent a lot of time under the car servicing it and making it what it is today.

Heater channels look solid as well

Even the original early running boards with this cross support are here!

Very solid

Jack points also remain sound and no signs of any welding or repair

Pretty awesome to see a chassis this solid and untouched on a 1950 car that
has spent its life in the Eastern US!

Bumpers are new high quality reproductions with excellent chrome.
Owner chased down a lot of really nice NOS original parts that he installed
during the refurbishment including new taillight lenses.

The electricals on the car are all working wonderfully after an all new, factory correct
early wiring harness was installed.

Correct early ribbed semaphores were rebuilt by John Henry
who is one of the gurus of this stuff.

Door fit is really nice on the car, body lines match up well.

Proper Huff key for the ignition

All new window scrapers and fents have been installed in the car so everything seals up nicely.

The all original interior remains in place.

Its at a point where I think many folks would want to re-do it
but I applaud the restraint and the preservationist approach in leaving it here.

New seat belts were installed for safety at some point
but everything else in here seems to be exactly what the car was delivered with in 1950

Very solid in the back corners and around the battery.

Floors under the mats still retain some pretty nice original paint

All original carpets and rubber mats.

Ill admit it would be a bit of a shame to change all this out for new stuff
but that choice can be made by the next caretaker of the car.

Dash is all original paint of course and it looks fantastic.

Back outside for a bit there are a few things to note.
At one point in its life it got bumped in the back.
Not a major collision but enough to leave its mark.
The engine lid was replaced at that time (and it is the correct year and style)
and as you can see in this pic the match to the body color wise is not perfect.
It looks like the rear fenders were painted at the same time.

All the correct 1950 trim and parts are present.

Wheels are the correct 16" design and the hubcaps are chrome
as correct for the Deluxe model

Recent Excelsior bias ply tires.

The original fine groove rubber remains on the running board
on the passenger side

Drivers side, the rubber has come off.
Correct reproduction material is available.

Sunvisor

Correct handles and window cranks

Dash pods are correct and original with great patina
A few NOS parts have been sourced and installed such as the ashtray and semaphore switch.

And the semaphores work wonderfully!

Original headliner is pretty amazing.

Not perfect of course, but its still hanging in there!

Original jack is present

The all new wiring harness is fantastic.
Correct down to the detail with cloth covered harness and all.

New correct single tip exhaust

The engine was recently gone through and refurbished
using many NOS  German parts.

Rear apron shows some damage from the aforementioned accident but the damage was minimal.

Underside of the engine lid was not color matched obviously
but that original numbers matching 25 horse engine is impressive.
The owner sourced some amazing NOS parts such as the "D" shaped
voltage regulator and "star" ignition coil.
Its beautiful and runs fantastic.

Awesome original tool roll...WOW!

Very solid and straight up front

Tags and numbers are all present and matching

16" spare wheel is two tone with a whitewall

New correct trunk liner installed

The original glove boxes are falling apart but are still here.

Correct VW logo on the hood and proper wire arm wipers

Just a neat old Beetle right here!

Maybe its not inviting enough inside that you'd want to wear your fancy duds
and have a night out on the town, but a pair of jeans, your dog riding shotgun
and a putter on down to the local cars and coffee in this sounds just about perfect.

Even the dome light works!

Great car, very honest, very correct and complete.
Lots of time and funds spent on getting it road ready and mechanically sound
now its up to a new owner to do what they want to do with it!
