This car is a pretty awesome machine.
It was built in 2002 for the Der Renn Kafer Cup, a race series that ran from 2001-2008.
The class was designed for DKP style VW’s that were judged equally for quarter mile times and show points.
This car came in second in points in 2003 out of a very tough field of 20 VWs.
It’s best time was a 12.10 for which it earned quickest time trophy in 2002 at Phoenix Bug O Rama.
So it not only looks good...it seriously hauled a**!!
In 2007 the engine was pulled and freshened up and detuned for the street with lower compression and a milder cam.
Also the race transmission was replaced with a Berg 5 speed and the roll bar was removed.
The car has only 3500 miles since including being driven twice from San Francisco to Orange County and back trouble free for Nick’s and The VW Classic.
It’s last outing was in September for the Sacramento Bug O Rama where it was raced in full street trim with pump gas and turned 12.8s.
This car needs nothing and is ready for racing, showing or just having fun as street car.
An original Black 67 was found for the start of the project. The Bug has had a pan off restoration.
The body and paint were done by Medrano’s Paint in L.A. which has done a lot of the DKP club cars.
The paint is just as nice under the fenders as on top.
Well detailed in all the deep corners...this was not a "quickie" job, but one done
properly and with a very strong attention to detail.
The engine was built, balanced and blueprinted by Ray Schubert.
It is a 2275cc with 9.5:1compression ratio.
It has a Forged Scat crank and H beam rods, Engle K8 cam with 1.4 rockers, Cima forged 94mm pistons,
Steve Tims heads 42x37.5 valves with matched manifolds. Berg full flow filter, A1 muffler, Berg sump, breather and linkage.
48IDA Italian Webers rebuilt by Art at ACE. Hunt Magneto with a custom Roger Crawford mount, Powder coated tin.
The real Italian Webers...the only way to fly.
Cleanly detailed.
The big Hunt magneto sure shows you that this is a "go" machine...not just a "show" machine.
The Bug was then put back together using all new rubber, wiring harness and upholstery.
The drivers seat is a racing bucket reupholstered to match the stock basket weave. The steering wheel is a beautiful original EMPI GT wheel.
Passenger seat is a stock lowback. Carpet, panels, headliner, etc are all superb.
The "real" Empi GT wheel...lots of reproductions out there, not so many genuine articles.
Headliner is superb.
The transmission is a Berg 5 speed built by KCR transmissions with a 3:88 ring and pinion.
It has a welded and gusseted case, super Diff and sway a way heavy duty axles, the Berg 5 speed mount kit.

Very clean underneath!
Fender wells are painted as well and are super clean.
High volume fuel pump.
The front beam was narrowed, adjusters installed as well as all new ball joints.
Neal wide five disc brakes are on the front with stock drums on the rear.
The wheels are BRMs with custom aluminum BRM caps 155/15 tires on front and M&H racemaster street drag tires on the rear.
Dash is super clean and stock...no radio, no extra gauges.
The car has a few subtle tricks that most people do not notice.
The turn signals was shaved and are now in the head lamps, the high beam switch doubles as the line lock switch.
The emergency flasher switch is the mag kill switch. This was done to keep a clean stock appearance.
The wiring in the engine compartment is hidden. The breather and lines for the engine are hidden below the air vents.
The electric fuel pump is rubber mounted to cut down on noise and the larger fuel lines are run through the tunnel just like stock.
Really a fantastic build of a very traditional Cal Looker.
The right stance, the right powerplant and all top quality.
This sort of build does not come cheap...yeah you can make one "look" the part pretty easy
but to make it perform like this one does and have all the best in mechanicals...
you will drain your bank account very fast!!
Gorgeous car...the real deal...no excuses and no corners cut.
