1971 VW Panel Van For Sale

The "Box on Wheels" is a term VW used to describe and market
the VW Transporter to the world and it certainly is that.
To think that such a simple design and idea would go on to be such an icon across the globe is pretty fun to ponder.
While there have been many many variations on the theme, the basic panel delivery van is where it all started.

This California based 1971 model is a very nice example, perhaps far nicer than most that you see out there.
These were work vehicles and they tended to lead hard lives of service.
Finding a really clean example in today's world is much tougher than you would think.

This one is a sweetheart inside and out.
It is owned by a true VW fanatic and he has spent a lot of time and effort
improving the Bus and putting things right since his purchase some time ago.

Its not a flawless example, but it shows very well indeed and always draws compliments.
An ideal toy for weekend play time or it could easily be put into use for business.
Imagine vending out of this at the local farmers market, or wherever with your company logo on the sides.

Personally I think it would be awesome with some Porsche logos on the sides and use it for
local car shows and swap meets...but that's just me.

Use your imagination...there are endless ways to fill and use that box on wheels.

Mechanically the Bus is excellent and peeking underneath you can see
many new details poking out. Fresh Koni shocks, recent tie rod ends, etc.
It is a fully sorted, very good runner and driver.

Highly rated Hankook tires on all four corners are an excellent fit and handle
whatever load you care to carry. 1971 was the first year for factory disc brakes
which was a very welcome addition to the model.

1971 is also the final year for the "upright" VW engine similar to the Beetle.
The joy of these engines is the ease of service as well as the low cost of parts.
When the "type 4" engine came into play in 1972, things became much more complex.
This engine has been upgraded with dual carburetors for just a little extra "go" but the displacement remains
at the stock 1600cc.  Simple, smooth and reliable.

Underneath is clean and complete. Nice ceramic coated exhaust system, good solid heater boxes
clean and dry and not a leaker. New shocks out back as well.

The interior of the Bus is very clean and mostly bare.
These panel vans are known to be a little loud inside with nothing in the back
but this one has been treated with a nice modern sound deadener on several areas and with the rubber floor mat
and clean rear panel installed it keeps noise down to a minimum.

Up front the factory floor mats are in place.
This Bus has the 1/3rd 2/3rd bench seat set up with the spare wheel and tire below.

Seat stand mats are in place as are retractable seat belts.

Seats and panels are done in a really sharp brick red mesh pattern vinyl with matching piping.

Dash is very clean and stock with the only modifications from original being
a dash mounted starter key switch and a modern radio.

Sliding door operates smoothly allowing access to the massive cargo space.

Body seals are all in great shape, decklid prop works as it should
Battery area is clean and solid.

Factory charcoal canister in place that keeps the fumes down.

Very solid in the wheel arches

There has been patching done to the front floors as visible from below.
It is solid and clean and there appears to be no active rust issues.

Passenger side front floor from below.
Could be sealed perhaps a little better on the bottom side but on top under the mat is looks smooth and shiny.

Under dash looks tidy

Slider hardware detail

Roof and rain gutters look very clean and smooth.

Door gaps are very good on this one!

Engine case is a new one, with no stamped number.
Engine is a recent rebuild with few miles since installation.
Very clean and leak free and it runs great.

Mirrors in very nice shape

More roof detail

Nice smooth and glossy paint on the Bus...look at the reflection in this shot.

"dog legs" and door jams are very clean.

Rear bumper has a couple of hairline finish cracks and a tiny kink on the drivers side.

Love that interior

Very cleanly detailed even in the spots you don't normally see.

Here you can see the front floor repair from above...very clean and smooth.

Rear cargo floor is very solid.
It does show signs of past hauling, a little wavy in spots with some dings here and there
but with the cargo mat in place you dont see it and everything has been cleanly refinished.

Door jam detail

Nice wiper detail

Alpine radio in the dash

Full headliner and clean visors.

Dash top has been painted body color

Nice to see a full headliner in place.
Very good condition

Drivers side floor under the mat

Nice clean corners

Great personalized plate.

Always garaged and well kept

So clean

Front end was fully rebuilt.

Mega straight and smooth down the sides.

One small ding in the aluminum trim on the window scraper on the drivers door.

These tires are awesome...and are nearly brand new.

Nice clean latches...I love seeing detail like this

And then back out in the sun.

In closing this really is a very nice, clean, solid Bus inside and out.
Its not "concours" perfect perhaps but it is far far nicer than the norm when it comes to these
"working class" models.  You would be hard pressed to find a cleaner one.
