1960 Volkswagen "Kombi" Bus For Sale

This awesome 1960 Kombi comes to us from Northern California where
it is in the hands of a lifetime VW nut. It has been his trusty personal steed
for quite a while now and has taken him on some amazing adventures.

Prior to his ownership it had a long and wonderful life with a great family
and their tales with it could fill this page (but will be forwarded to the new owner).

Bought new at Continental Motors in California in 1960 by the Braden family,
this base model grey Kombi was converted to a camper by the owners and
it took them all over the country. They kept it for 50 years before giving it up,
and it has been adventuring ever since then in the hands of its current owner.

The home made camper stuff that the Braden family installed is long gone, but
the unrestored machine has been beautifully crafted by mother nature.
The faded through paint and surface rust somehow makes it more attractive.
Like a scruffy dog, you just want to give it a hug.

The other beautiful part of that patina is that you can drive it without fear.
Here is the Bus on a recent Shasta Snow Trip adventure that is a legendary
VW Bus bash event that brings the craziest adventurers out in their "Boxes on wheels"
This Bus has made the run more than once as well as countless long trips to the shows and events.
Its one of those old reliable rigs that despite all obstacles, just keeps on rolling.

And it has spent its whole life rolling. This early shot of the Bus with the Braden family is
pure gold. They ran the whole family all over the land in the trusty Bus.
There is a lot of good vibes and amazing soul with this one.
In later years after the kids had jumped ship, the trusty Bus was put into use by Mr Braden
at the Begonia farm that he worked for many years, as well as care-taking properties
in his retirement after a move from Southern to Northern California.
He continued driving it well into his 80's hauling tools and whatever about.
The unstoppable Bus never stopped...this tool has been well used and well loved.

The interior is empty now in back,
the home built camper bits are long gone, but the floors remain quite solid.
There have been just a couple small patches done as you can see
but the rest is original sheet metal.

Pretty impressive actually...these old things really can get crusty on the bottoms over time.

The dash is clean and un cut...still original paint of course and
even the factory radio block off plate remains in place.

Fuel door, VW logo gas cap

Original mirrors

The engine is a stock single port ATK 1600cc with 12 volt electrics that
runs fantastic. Brakes and trans are good, Bilstein shocks all the way around, a 67 Bus front end installed
with improved braking and a front sway bar. The owner often takes it out on
grand adventures
but he has realized it is time to send it off to new hands so he can focus on
other projects and cool stuff.

So pure and simple.
Being the base model Kombi it really is no frills...and I love that!

Very solid around the windshields which is a common spot for corrosion.

Pop out windows are in great shape

Rear bumper has pea shooter exhaust cut outs along the lower edge
Original dealer plate frame and black California plates.
Clean title and current registration.

Front floors are impressively solid and original

In this simple seat and behind minimal controls and distractions...the world is yours.
Just turn that key and go.

Divider wall in nice straight shape

Another view of the floor in the cargo area.
Rear bench seat fitted in this pic.

Wow...she is solid in the front floors!

All terrain tires mean business and give it a fantastic rugged attitude.
Original paint wheels and hubcaps as well...big time cool factor for the patina purists out there.
You cant fake this sort of funk...its only time and mother nature that can build a Bus like this.

The body overall is pretty decent.
There are some dings and dents of course, and a bit of rust underneath, but minimal.
The only notable major body repair was the replacement of the roof.
It was extremely well done and if I didn't tell you, you wouldn't have guessed it looking at these images.

It just has such a great vibe to it.
I'm falling in love with it myself in writing it up and staring at the shots.
I'd personally want to put a simple camper bed in the back and maybe accessorize it
with some cool little things here and there...but that awesome patina would be retained.

Its perfect the way it is...if you can call something so imperfect "perfect"

Leave this as it is or use it as a blank canvas to create your own little oasis...
this is the beauty of the VW Bus. That "space" out back is so incredibly inviting
to hang out in...or to fill with whatever you like to haul around.
Here in this shot you can see just a couple signs of the roof replacement with the
different color to the sheet metal and the primer spots on the support cross bars.
Hardcore Bus gurus may notice the cross bar with dome light over the back seat...not normally there!

Good Bus

Roof and gutters look great.

Really nice and solid

There is a little rust below, but structurally its still very good.

Passenger cargo rocker has it's hole at the front

A few bubbles down low along the passenger side

Small patch in the wheel arch

Drivers side rocker looks pretty good.

Such a neat Bus.

The walk around shots show it so well...there is no bad angle to this one.
The patina is just awesome, and its a well tested runner and driver, not something
that has just been pulled out of a barn and needs everything.
2 owners since new, and all that history and fun comes with it wherever it goes.
