1964 VW Beetle Sunbroof Sedan For Sale

1964 was an interesting year for the Beetle.
This was the first year for the crank back steel sunroof, larger front turn signals and license plate light
and also the final year for the smaller windows that started in 1958. The next year the glass became much
larger and changed the shape of the Beetle quite a bit.

This particular example in its original Pearl White paint is a fantastic example that has had a well cared for life
and an incredible paper trail that records everything that has been done to it over the years.

A very full set of service records is included with the car that read like a good book as you leaf through them.

Some of the major chapters of that book to make note of are a fully rebuilt engine in 1996

Diving back in history there are even receipts for basic oil changes that include the recommended rebuild

Lots of receipts from a Seattle based shop called Pauls Clinic

Prior to Paul's there are other shops and a lot of VW Porsche dealer receipts as well.

The car was sold new in the Seattle area and remained there nearly its whole life.
It is currently located in Los Angeles in the hands of a prolific VW collector.

I just love seeing all these records as they really can teach you a lot about the car as well as the sort of care it has
received during its life.

The car was in the original owners hands from 1964 through 2009 according to the paperwork!

Even the original sales paperwork is here!
$2176,74 out the door!

Optional undercoat, whitewall tires, mirror and seat belts.
Even the wheel trim rings and bumper stiffeners were added on to the original invoice.

Sold new at Evergreen VW Porsche!

Ok...enough with the "book" of the history of the car...lets get down to the details.

Lets start with the key (a poetic choice I know...)
Original VW key starts this baby up and it is an excellent runner and driver.

The original body seals and window rubber still have some life to them which show that it is a car
that has not been exposed to the elements much.

The paint appears to be original with just minor touch ups.
I'm not seeing overspray on the window seals or anything like that.

Under the back seat is where rust always seems to start on these old VWs and this one is
superbly solid and clean.

Truly wonderful under here, all factory finishes remain intact and everything is rock solid.

That $18 for the dealer applied undercoating was money well spent.
It still remains solid and intact and has protected the chassis of this car wonderfully.

No signs of any rust or repairs underneath

Definite signs of road use and built up chassis lubricant.

Looks like recent soft brake lines...the chassis and all mounting points are superb

Car has a very nice set of radial tires with excellent tread.

Wow! This baby is SOLID!

The underside of the engine is clean and dry and looking deeper we can see the clean pushrod tubes that still shine
as well as a modern transmission mount that all back up the heavy service work done to the car in the file of receipts.

Under the front hood the original trunk liner and wiring cover are in place and are in impressive shape.
The spare wheel and tire look to be from another car, but are in great shape.

Original jack is still in its holder

Spare tire well looks very solid and straight

Original body tag is present .

The interior of the car is very presentable and clean.
The seats look to have been redone at some point, but in the correct original colors and patterns.
Door panels, carpets and mats all appear to be the originals

Dash looks excellent with no modifications or changes, even the factor radio clock off plate is in place.

Seats are in very nice shape.

I see that the dome light actually works as well!

Rear seat looks great as does that amazing headliner!

In the glove box are some more great history pieces including this notebook with every tank of fuel
noted and recorded.  When I see signs of this level of care and detail for a car, I know the owner was someone special.
In todays world we just drive them until they drop, but this owner came from the old school...proper care means a long
life to a vehicle and this car is rolling proof of that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Original manuals

Even the tool roll and a period first aid kit are in the glove box!

Very nice!

The paint appears to be the original and the color matched fender beading looks of the proper age and patina to back that up.

A few chips and scratches here and there, the car is not perfect
but it definitely has survived the past 55 years amazingly well.

There are some scratches in the paint that show careful brush touch up by the owner.

The 1200cc engine runs superb and has had some upgrades including 12 volt electrics with an alternator.

009 mechanical advance distributor is another very nice upgrade.

Bosch blue coil

Original markings on the air cleaner still bright and complete

This was a complete rebuilt long block at the time, not a rebuild of the original case,
so the case is not the original matching number unit.

The engine room is nice and clean and the surrounding  metal is all nice original finish.

I love seeing the original fender beading and all the seals and parts where they should be.

The wide license plate light is new for 1964.

Tires look excellent, wheel are nice and clean.
Hubcaps are aftermarket replacements.

A couple chrome flaws on the drivers side front cap.

What a great looking car...so stock, so pure, so simple.
The crank back sunroof is a wonderful option as well!
(prefect for palm trees)

Some nice interior details

Clean car!

Looks like the turn signal switch was replaced at some point as it is black in color
(would have matched the column when it left the factory)

Just awesome

The correct tan running boards are in place as well as accessory gravel guards.

Very clean around the key and ashtray

Never had a radio installed!

A couple small dings in the bumper guards but everything looks to be the original German parts.

Accessory passenger side mirror

Pretty difficult to find them this nice and unmolested these days!

Odometer reads 39,802 miles at the time of these photos.
Looking at the service records, the engine was rebuilt at 22,000 miles , so that is just 17,000 miles on that engine.

Very minor wear along the edge of the steering wheel

Steel sunroof opens and closes well and the seals are good and intact.

Black California plate is not original to the car, but it sure looks the part.

In closing this is a great find for someone that want a Beetle that is pure.
Great runner and driver, wonderful originality, rock solid chassis and dream straight body
with nice original paint. The documentation and paper trail is the icing on the cake and that sunroof is the cherry.
All together it makes for one sweet Beetle!
