1950 VW Deluxe Split Window Beetle Sedan For Sale
SOLD!

This is a very beautiful and desirable 1950 Deluxe Beetle.
It is a very clean and recent restoration, rebuilt 25 horse engine, many nice details and is a turn key,
ready to enjoy car that is located in Orange County California.

The color is called Bordeaux red and it is a beautiful color that is period correct and
not often seen on Beetles of the era.

The car was built on August 17th 1950 and left the factory for the US on September 6th.
This is a genuine "Hoffman Car", being one of the earliest VWs officially destined for the US market.
According to the Hoffman registry, this is the fourth oldest existing 11c model.
Production wise it is within the first 10 VWs shipped to Hoffman who was the sole importer at this time.

So...to make that clear, this is one of the first 10 VWs ever built for the American market.

The early "Hoffman Cars" have become quite desirable among American collectors.
While many early cars have come over to the US through individual import over the years,
to have one of the very first to actually be built and officially imported here is a true badge of honor.
America was a massive market for the VW and this is one of the first few dribbles
that became the massive flood of Beetles across American soil.

The restoration is of nice quality, but not perfect.
It shows beautifully in photos and in person to all who see it,
but a trained eye will see flaws in paint and body and general finish.

The car was originally sold to a gentleman in Connecticut.
In 1996 the car came to California. The current owner has had the car since 2004
and the restoration of the car has been done during his ownership.

The split rear window is an iconic image of the earliest VWs and
to roll into an event in a split definitely puts you at the top of the heap.
There is just something about these early cars that really attract attention.

The split dash is another great detail that many collectors and enthusiasts dream of seeing in front of them.

Such a beauty

Correct 16 " wheels in two tone are fitted with the large logo hubcaps.
Technically I believe these stopped in 48 in this design, but they look awesome on the car.

Proper grooved bumpers, taillights and "popes nose" license plate light.

VW logo fluted headlight glass
Proper round horn grilles.

Fuel tap and "ZAR" plate are intact.
Carpet and floor mats in decent shape.

Proper grooved door handles and window cranks.
Upholstery material used is a tweed. Not original, but stitched in the original patterns.

Birth certificate from Volkswagen tells the story of it being and export car with delivery to New York.

Some good original Sekurit glass with the proper large logo

Functional semaphores were rebuilt in Canada by a well respected expert.

Door strikers were painted over during the restoration.
Correct grooved body trim is evident in this photo

Choke knob has the proper markings.

Glove boxes have been trimmed in the matching tweed and have the proper deluxe aluminum trims around the opening.

Reproduction original early owners manual

Dimpled shift knob

New seat belts.

Luggage rails are present in the "way back" as original.

Correct split dome lamp

Matching bolster pillows on the back seat

Headliner in nice condition and well fit.

Steering wheel, knobs and controls are all in nice condition.

New screws in the door hinges.

Nice original clock

Speedometer looks excellent as do the switches and the correct key switch.

Front wipers are excellent thin "wire" type

Solid hood emblem is another early detail.

Front bumper blade has some chrome peeling spots.

Front fenders are later replacements but the wiring tubes have been fitted.

Front apron detail below.

Front suspension

Rear lever shocks have been fully rebuilt.

Very nice correct single tip exhaust.
Finish work on bottom edge of rear apron is a little rough.

Rear apron shows signs of replacement at some point with visible welds on the inner wall under the fenders.
Rear fenders have the correct early pressings.

The engine on the car is excellent and has been fully rebuit.

Transmission as well has been rebuilt and the detail underneath as well as on top is very good.

Rear apron detail

Under the engine lid.

The engine has all the right little bits on it such as the slip in oil filler

"D" voltage regulator

"T" air cleaner

"Star" coil

And 383 Bosch flat top distributor

Engine number is not the original to the car.

The long block was rebuilt by Joe Ruiz
Carburetor, Fuel pump and Distributor by Ed Fall
The intake manifold is the correct "K" unit.
It has the proper domed oil cooler in place as well as the double flapped heater boxes as it should.

A couple small paint chips on this wheel

Proper aluminum hood handle

Front hood is not the original to the car, but it fits well.

There are signs of the later model "hump" for the hood emblem being flattened out
to accept the correct early style emblem.

Matching spare wheel and tire.

Nice reproduction of the early stapled trunk liner.

Front spare tire well area shows signs of bodywork.

Finish work is a little thick and sloppy in here.

The wiring harness is an all new correct unit from Zarwerks.

This is a little sloppy in my opinion.
Body tags are painted over, sheet metal is distorted and a bit lumpy.
Body mounting bolts that go to the front beam are missing.

When the spare tire and wheel are in place you dont see this repair, but it is this sort of flaw that keeps
the car from being top level when it comes to the restoration.

Floorpans have been replaced and look excellent...nice and smooth.

Very clean!

Nice detail of original Kamax bolts on the fenders.

Its a clean and attractive car with a wonderful history.
The mechanical parts have been professionally rebuilt by top names in the industry.
The downsides are incorrect interior material and a fairly average body and paint job.
If the car were prefect, the price would certainly be far higher,
but taking all things into consideration, the car is a very clean and fun ride that is ready for a new home.

And...that history... Wow!
One of the first 10 VWs officially imported to the US.
That's a rare find!
