1963 VW Karmann Ghia Coupe ~ 18,000 original miles!
The photos will most certainly tell you more about the car than I can with
mere words.
There have been just the mildest paint touch ups done to the body to take
care of a few stone chips
but no accident damage, no rust and all original German stuff everywhere
you look.
A true time warp car indeed.
The car has been in the hands of some of the top VW collectors in the world
and has been passed around
over the years from pampered garage to pampered garage, each time lovingly
cared for a prayed to
like a car of this stature should be. Its a car that is extremely well
preserved and my hope is that
the next owner will continue the loving care in the car so that it remains
so sweet for years to come.
Cars like this are extremely rare these days...and as time goes on, the
all original "survivor" cars are
going to lead the way in value to collectors, surpassing the value of a
nicely restored example by far.
A car can only be original once...it can be "restored" hundreds
of times.
Nothing holds a candle to an all original car.
Just gorgeous lines the Ghia's have...truly a beautiful shape.
Look in the fender well in this photo...and this is not detailed...spend
some time underneath
this baby and it's ready for show time with the mirrors underneath!
The car is known by the Karmann Ghia collectors as being one of the best
unrestored 63 coupes out there
and it is in the Karmann Ghia Registry...and has the badge to go with that.
Such a pretty face.
The color is the classic "Seeblau" ( or Sea Blue ) which is perhaps
one of the most iconographic "Volkswagen Colors" of the day.
Tires are not the originals by the way...but nice modern radials with the
proper thin whitewall.
As straight and as dreamy as you could ever imagine.
Nice reflection in the paint surface...excellent fit to the panels.
Obviously a "virgin" type of car.
The original numbers-matching engine runs like a charm
The car drives like it was brand new...heck it's pretty darn close to that
already.
The only thing I see that is out of place from being 100% factory is the
blue coil and the modern filter and plug wires.
Obviously these are silly nit-picky details, but with a car this nice Ive
got to point out something that is off
just to make me fell like Im doing my job.
This is the "stale air" 40 horse engine, still 6 volt electrics
of course.
Transaxle is original too of course, brakes have been replaced for safety
Very clean in the engine room.
The area under the battery is one spot where there has been some masterful
paint blending.
No rust was present...just a few paint flaws that the current owner just
couldnt live with.
The underside of the car has remained completely untouched and un-detailed.
My experience with these original cars has proven that with a little elbow
grease
one can usually polish up the vast majority of the underbelly with suprising
results.
Extremely solid floor pans and rockers on this car.
Cant get much nicer than this.
And whoever gets it...try to clean the pan up just to satisfy my curiosity.
A little polish on a super fine steel wool pad...the pan will look black
again and will probably shine!
Very very solid stuff.
No rust in the fender wells either...
Sweet
The interior is super impressive as well.
All original everything in here.
Super clean steering wheel, guages are clean and bright. Dash is gorgeous.
18,378 miles at the time of these photos.
And this is documented according to the owner.
The Sapphire radio works well.
Barely a scratch on the dash.
Dash pad is very impressive and crack-free.
Note the original glove box and details.
I dont think I have ever seen original Ghia seats this nice!
Gorgeous.
And the smell inside is like fine perfume to a VW guy...you know what Im
talking about guys...right?
The original wool carpers are in amazing condition.
Backs of the seats are very clean as well...no footprints from the kids
in here!
Nice dont you think?
Original headliner too of course...
(somebody count how many times Ive used the word "original" in
this listing!)
Just the slightest discoloration around the edge near the window.
Here you can see a little more of this discoloration.
Regardless, for original material it is wildly amazing.
Door panels are superb.
Look at the even pleats in the door pocket...this is what I mean by the
saying
"Nobody does it better than they did at the VW factory...Nobody!"
Only the ever so slightest sign of wear to the carpet on the edge...otherwise
truly impressive.
Carpet in the back is just as amazing.
And a quick shot under the seat just for good measure.
Cool VW service stcker in the door jam.
Up close you can see the minor paint touch ups in spots.
The owner states that about 80% of the paint on the car is original finish
as applied at the factory.
The areas that have been touched up are very well matched ineed.
Some minors stone chips in spots.
Original trim rings and painted center hubcaps.
Super straight under the front bumper.
All the correct factory parts.
Glass is all excellent, the rubber still in impressive condition.
Nice reflection and great hood fit.
Some details shots that show the rubber
The perfect nose.
Under the hood looks almost completely untouched.
Original tool roll is present, as is the jack.
The washer bottle is still hung on the spare with the wire hanger.
Spare tire appears to be the original.
Gorgeous inside the spare tire well and backside of the nose.
If anyone reading this knows Ghias...they will know just what a pretty
sight this is.
Back side of the dash.
the "Birth Certificate" from VW
Original owners manuals are beautiful.
Radio manuals too.
Original Colorado plate envelope and AAA paperwork.
In closing this is an amazine find and an amazing investement opportunity.
Original low mileage cars are the way to go when it comes to collecting.
This is one to hide away, drive sparingly, and polish with a soft diaper.
