1958 BMW Isetta 300 For Sale
In any case this has been a personal project for me for a while, one that
was started by a good friend of mine
and then I hoped to finish it. The clock ticks on and little progress gets
made...perhaps it's time to sell.
The car has undergone a complete ground up, every nut and bolt restoration
that is ever so close to completion.
Basically no expense spared, the goal was to make it darn near perfect.
There are still a few details to attend to, such as the sunroof cover (all
the framework is restored and I have apattern for the material)
install the chrome trim on the rear window, install interior panels (they
are readily available as are most parts), finish istallation
of the turn signal and light switches, and a few things like that. It really
is getting close.
The whole front of the car opens up to give you access to the drivers compartment.
There is nothing funnier than popping this thing open when you pull up
somewhere.
Everything is new or restored in here.
There's a chip in the horn button, so that should be replaced (same as
early standard model VW)
German square weave carpet on the luggage deck.
Here she is sitting in my home garage a few months ago.
The front bumper bars could use re-chroming, as well as the taillight rings.
Everything else is excellent. The paint and bodywork is excellent.
About $3000 was spent on this...and when you consider how small the car
is...thats a ton of money.
The car was stripped down to the shell for paintwork and the underside
is as shiny as the top.
Here's the front apron, you can see the detail under here.
Front suspension.
Its a little dusty but you get the idea.
Further back under the car.
This is the area under the luggage shelf.
I forgot to take a photo of the engine...I'll do that shortly.
The 300cc engine is nice and clean and it is in running condition, however
it has developed
a knocking noise that we believe to be bearing related. Ive spoken
with an Isetta expert
about it and its a common problem but it will require removing the engine
and opening it all up to repair the damaged bearing. So while it can be
driven as it sits,
I would highly suggest NOT driving it until this is repaired.
In any case, its an extremely cute little car and Im sure whoever ends
up with it will be as excited about it
as I have been. A big part of me wants to finish it and have some fun driving
it before it goes, but Im trying to be realistic
and take some of the projects off my plate, so regrettably I am offerring
it for sale. I have it priced very reasonably
considering the work that has been done to it and the potential for value
when completed.
Seriously, there are two of them for sale currently in Hemmings Motor News
for around $18,000 each, and one is overseas.
