In 1974 VW was starting to lose some ground to the Japanese imports here in the US and
as a result they were looking for ways to attract car shoppers into the showrooms.
One of the ways they did this was through special edition models like this one here...the "Sun Bug"

The Sun Bugs were available in either a convertible or in a hardtop like this with a crank back steel sunroof.
All of them were made in this gold color and the production run was fairly small.

Not every car got the full "Sun Bug" treatment with the emblems and all
as final details were often left to the dealers.

This car has always been in California since new and is a pretty clean example overall.
Mechanically it is excellent with a freshly rebuilt transmission and clutch just in the past month.
Its a great driver and has an overall very attractive look to it.

It is not a show car as far as the level of detail...but she looks good.

Good tires, clean title, current tags
Ready for a new owner.

Nice bright chrome and the rubber looks good

Wheels are the correct steel sport wheels offered at the time.

Good tread on the skins...wheels have the right lug caps and center "nut" cap.

Shows quite well.
Lenses are bright and clear.

Many of the Sun Bugs got a special emblem back here on the deck lid where the Volkswagen script is.
They were made of plastic and deteriorated quickly...finding an original is tough.
Some cars never got the emblem, it was up to the sealer to fit it.

The engine in this car is the stock 1600cc carbureted dual port.
It runs excellent, and all the proper original parts are in place.
Its not show detailed, but it will definitely get you where you want to go.

Underside of the engine lid shows original paint finish.

The underside of the car is very solid and untouched.
Not a rusty ride.

The sunroof is wonderful!

Original dash is in place and still looking good.
Factory AM/FM radio, original woodgrain.
There are a couple cracks in the dash pad as you can see, but a plastic dash cap is included that covers over this.

Carpet is in really nice shape...a full set of ladybug floor mats are fitted.

Original door panels

Newer carpet in the back...looks like some minor staining along the bottom in the corner

Nice

Seats look great

The rare Sun Bug only gear shift knob is in place.

Love the radio

85k miles on the odometer

Interior shows well!

Padded steering wheel was an original detail on the model.

The car has been repainted on the outside.
The color is perhaps a tiny shade off of the original but it looks the part.
There is a little overspray in the door jams and edges, but it does not stand out significantly

Dash cap is included to cover the original pad.
A few spare parts and service bits come with it as well.

Trunk has a nice liner in place under the stuff.
Original paint code tag is still on the inner body near the drivers side strut tower.

Headliner in nice shape

A little surface rust starting below the door but it does not look cancerous to me.

Here you can see an example of the overspray in the door jams that I mentioned above and the slight difference in paint color
between the original paint and the respray. Its not bad, but if you are a picky nut like myself , you see it.

In closing this is a nice car.
Great driver level example, but certainly clean enough to get compliments often.
The Sun Bug model is pretty special as well, and they have their following.
As the values of the 70's era cars climb, the limited edition examples like this will lead the way.
