1973 VW Thing For Sale

This is a very special Thing.
This car was the display car for Volkswagen at the LA Auto Show in 1973
and it is truly loaded with all of the rarest Thing accessories you could imagine.
It is a one owner car since new, always in California, well maintained and cared for from day one.

When you see VW Things for the most part they are as bare bones as you can get.
The accessories were not ordered often and most of them you just never see.
This being a car that was on the auto show display,  VW wanted to show it all...so it is loaded!

The rear mounted spare tire, bumper guards, wheel covers, hard top, roof rack...the list goes on and on.

The body is in excellent condition, never wrecked or rusted...very well preserved.

The front bumper bar in the center is another factory accessory.
Fog lights, horns, and check out the vanity plate!

The JR emblem on the hood was added...the owner's initials.

The hardtop with the roof rack is an uncommon sight.

The wheel covers are original accessories and it has the full set plus one on the spare!
Try to find these caps today...I dare you!

The car is an excellent runner and driver.

No rust, no wrecks

"The Thing" decal on the back is a factory item as well.

The car is an early production model...one of the very first to hit US shores.

And here on the shore near it's home in Clearlake California...it is as pretty as an "Ugly VW" can be.

The bumper guards are an original accessory and are extremely rare and bizarre!

The owner added this sports car club badge...it has never been to Mississippi...but it is a neat little doo dad just the same.

Excellent tires on the stock wheels.
Wheel covers have the Wolfsburg crest in the center.

There are a few scratches and chips in the finish...the car is all original and not restored.
It has been used, but never abused.
You can see a little scuff here on the bumper.

Some stone chips on the leading edge of the rear fenders, and some smalll ones on the nose of course.

Here is a paint flaw on the hood.

Original keys and VW Thing key fob.

Under the hood all is in order...original decals are all in place.

Original ID plate

Factory gas heater is another option.
Check out the accessory light under the hood...there is a matching one in the back.
Both were factory accessories.

Wrapped up in the spare tire well are the original side curtains for the top.

Here you can see all the goodies on the front..
The fog lights, brush bar, bumper guards, horns, heater...it has it all.

Inside it has some special goodies as well.
Check out the super rare "sports" steering wheel with Wolfsburg crest center pad!!
It also has the center console and the original rubber mats.
The shifter has been changed to a "trigger" style.
Seats are in good condition front and rear.

Decal for the gas heater operation.

Top has the original VW part number tag

Dang those bumper guards are freaky!

The rear mounted spare is a slick item.
Check out behind it at the rear deck...never drilled for a license plate
as the car was set up just like you see it when brand new.

The engine is the original 1600cc unit and it is very stock and un-altered and is very clean.
The engine was rebuilt about 6 years ago...very minimal miles on it since.
Total on the car is about 120k.

Here you can see the accessory light under the decklid...this is fully functional and is controlled by a mercury switch.
Like your fridge...it only comes on when the door is open!

Really a nice all original car...the history behind it is stellar and it's early production date, auto show
provenance, and long list of rare accessories makes it a car that a true VW Thing purist will want to grab for sure.
I can not imagine that there were many VW Things outfitted like this one!!

What a great find and a rare opportunity.
If there was ever a VW Thing to grab and hold and preserve...it is this one!
It's a one of a kind and a special car indeed.
