1973 VW Thing For Sale

This Southern California based 73 "Thing" is a really gorgeous car
with a performance engine and many custom upgrades.

The VW Thing was a fairly short lived model here in the US.
Built in Mexico and sold under the model name Safari, Trekker and Kubelwagen in
other parts of the world, but here in the US at "The Thing" in 1973 and 1974.

These cars have a cult following worldwide and are a massively fun car to drive and play with.

With a convertible top, removable doors and a windshield that folds flat,
The Thing is the "Swiss Army Knife" of the road and trail.

This example is super clean and stylish with its Porsche Fuchs alloys and awesome
plaid interior. Its a car that is at home on the show field as well as the mountain trail.

Really clean and sanitary in its presentation.
The white exterior with black bumpers and trim is really set off
beautifully by the wheels and all terrain tires.

Fairly stock suspension height but upgraded with taller than original tires and the addition of
a custom engine guard visible under the rear bumper.

The car was originally yellow in color but during its extensive restoration
it was painted Porsche Carrera White and was fitted with 1974 model side scoops.

This was a body off restoration completed in 2020 and the car has been very well cared for and
kept garaged since. It still remains very fresh in appearance.

New top, matching side curtains come with it as well.

Top down the fun expands to include all around you!

Polished alloy wheels really look sweet.

H4 headlamps , bumpers are beautifully finished.

Fog lights added to the front bumper look super cool

Excellent body and paint with very nice fit and finish to all body panels

I love the VW 181 logo down low on the sides.
The model number 181 is the VW assigned code for the Thing

Top and side curtains are in beautiful shape
The side curtains lift in and out easily when the doors are open
and the doors themselves are removable very quickly as well for fun open air Jeep like motoring.

The side scoops were introduced in the 1974 model year
and greatly aid in cooling. These have been added to this 1973 model car.

The exhaust routes high and exits through the rear bumper.

Super clean!

Four wheel disc brakes have been added to the car with a Porsche 5 lug bolt pattern.
Excellent Toyo open country all terrain tires on all four corners.
The Thing was original delivered with a 14" steel wheel with a simple domed hubcap.
These 15" alloys and big tires fill the fender wells nicely.

What a great wheel and tire combo this is.
Off road tires on a Porsche wheel just screams "fun".

Locking fuel cap

New mirrors on passenger and driver side.

Paint finish has a high gloss and the minimal chrome is bright and clean.
