1978 Volkswagen Hormiga For Sale
SOLD!!
There are a lot of special models that VW has made around the world
that never made it to America.
The Volkswagen Hormiga (or German Basistransporter) is certainly one of
them.
I have been in the VW scene for over 25 years and this is the only one
I have ever physically seen.
I have heard of others...perhaps there are four or five in the US...but
I would bet this is the nicest.
This is a Mexican built model for the local trade only.
Hormiga means Ant in Spanish and the mighty ant is certainly known for
it's power
and strength as well as carrying capacity.
The design is simple and with the venerable air cooled Beetle engine
(mounted in the front)
It can pull it's own weight and then some vary capably.
The bid stout wood bed with fold down side gates allows for easy access
to the cargo.
The bumpers and framework and all the details are clean and simple in
design.
If the term "no frills" had a picture in the encyclopedia...it may very
well show a Hormiga.
The big mud flaps are not a factory item but they do help keep the mud
off the back bumper.
Brand new tires on all four corners by the way and the whole truck has
received a recent nice cosmetic restoration.
New paint, many nice details. It has been photographed twice so far for
feature articles and there might possibly be more after that.
The roof top air intake is a cool feature.
The very square body shape is fun to look at.
This restoration is one we oversaw here at Oldbug.com
so we are very knowledgeble about what went into it.
The VW logo is new.
Sliding rear window.
A good looking truck and one that really does draw a crowd at the
events.
It is very very uncommon and the majority of the VW people seem to have
never heard of the Hormiga
and that makes owning it a pretty neat thing...it is nice to have
something nobody else has!
The interior is very spartan and simple.
The dashboard is similar to the barndoor era Busses with just the
single pof that holds the speedometer and switches.
The truck is front wheel drive similar in layout to the Tempo Matador
trucks of the early 50's.
The engine sits behind the transmission and under the cab, There is
access to the top of the engine from under
the seat inside the cab as well as from below.
The engine is a fresh rebuild and the drive axles are also new.
Transmission was serviced and works fine.
Here you can see the side of the transaxle with the axle coming out and
down to the wheel.
Load capacity is pretty big while the vehicle itself is roughly the
size of a standard VW Bus.
This shot was staged for one of the VW magazine photo shoots and the
cargo being original VW
parts boxes...
A very fun and funky and extremely rare VW model.
If you are a collector that is really trying to have the "whole
set"...you will have a heck of a time finding one of these!
The truck is currently located in Southern California and has a clean
and clear Florida title.
The VW Hormiga...ever see one?
