1968 VW Westfalia Hardtop Camper

1968 was a big year for the VW Bus line...many changes went into play as the split screen style Bus
made way for the "Bay Window" models that would continue up until 1979.
While many prefer the looks of the early models, the changes made in 1968 were vast improvements
and for those that ruly like to drive and enjoy their vintage vehicles...the Bay Windows are a true delight to drive.
Better vision, smoother supension, improved handling, and the list goes on and on.

The Westfalia campers have been in the spotlight recently and values have been climbing steadily.
One of these old VWs is a far better investment these days than the stock market appears to be !!
Anyway, the Westy campers are really great and give the owner some very fun options for ways to enjoy
the vehicle. The most common Westy campers are the pop top models...the hardtop models like this one
are a bit harder to come by it seems. The benefit of the hardtop models is that for the surfing crowd,
you can put your longboard up on the roof without having to screw racks to the fiberglass roof...
same goes for bike racks or luggage racks for that matter. Also, many garages these days seem to have pretty low
openeings at the garage door that the pop top model may not fit into !

This example is a pretty nice one. Its a good solid and honest California Bus with a known history.
It retains all of it's original equipment and is clean and attractive.
The paintwork is recent and new window rubbers and such have been installed.
The interior was left pretty much untouched and is in very fine original condition.

The body is straight and the paint quality is pretty nice.

Clean and functional...no wild modifications or odd changes...just as VW built it to be.

The nose appears to be very straight and smooth and the original bumper retains the proper rubber topped
guards. Chrome is in presentable condition and the turn signals and other lenses are in pretty clean shape as well.

Original windshield in the Bus, but re-installed with new rubber seals.

Excellent tires on all four corners.

Original State of California body tag as well as the Westfalia tag...so this is a genuine article,
not a standard Bus with the camper bits added on.

Rocker panels look super solid and untouched...note the factory weld pattern along the edge.

Smooth and straight down the sides.

Good fit and finish to the rear hatch and engine lid.
Rear bumper also has the original rubber topped guards in very nice shape.

Volkswagen script emblem

Black California plates.
Title is clear.

Detail of the bumper guard

Rear windows are tinted for security and comfort when inside.
Drivers side of the body is very straight and smooth as well.

The proper round reflectors are present on all corners (quite often missing on these Busses)
New hubcaps on the proper 14" wheels.

Driver's side rocker looks very smooth as well.
I see a sign of some minimal bodywork just above the seam here...must have been a small dent here.
No signs of any rust or rust repairs though which is the most important.

Power plug outlet and original tag

The interior is almost completely original with the exception of new front seat upholstery.

Dash is all original and untouched, door panels and floor mats as well.

Front floors show very very minor surface rust strating that should probably be cleaned and treated
but the floors are super solid in the Bus.

Better view from the passenger side...looks pretty clean for being original eh?

Good unmodified dash.

Floor mats in nice shape.

Original paint on the floors here by the way...looking very solid.

Front seats have been very nicely re-upholstered.

Steering wheel and instruments are in nice shape, note the nice shifter extension accessory.

Wood roof panels are in great shape.

Very clean original condition...a couple of slight scratches but super nice for being 40 years old!
Rear cargo net is still in place but the elastic is sagging a bit.

All cabinetry and everything back here is original and still looking quite nice.

Rear seat flips out into a bed, original upholstery looks to be holding up very well.
Original flooring too which is very rare to find in this sort of condition.

Jump seat and removeable camp stool

Ice box sink cabinet in nice condition.

Stainless sink in nice shape. Hand pump is untested and the faucet did feel a little loose.

Spice rack and folding table in great shape.

Inside of the ice box looks pretty clean too!

Original Westfalia tag inside...look at that nice floor too!

Closet door is clean...added little hook for a wisk broom.

Rear wall cabinet in great shape...rear cushions are also very nice.

Original spare tire cover has some dicocloration from the sun but is intact.

Rear hatch panel

Rear luggage floor is super solid.

The engine appears to be the original (have not checked the numbers)
and it runs very nice. The owner states that it has been rebuilt.
The Bus runs and drives well...just turn the key and go.

Engine compartment is pretty clean

Battery side as well

Underside of the engine.

Chassis and underbody structure is very very solid.

Under the front floors...very sound

Fender wells look super solid too.

A good looking Bus.
All virgin German steel, never rusted or wrecked, nice original interior, nice fresh exterior paint.

Good Bus indeed.
