1960 Double Door Walk Thru Panel Bus For Sale

This 1960 VW Bus is located in Southern California
and is a very fun and unique machine inside and out.

Starting with a rare and desirable double door walk thru panel van,
this has been transformed into the ultimate summer cruiser and camper.

A sneak peek inside the back shows the cargo doors on both sides and the walk thru
front seat formation that makes for a very cool little hang out spot on wheels.
The rear bench folds flat into a bed as you can see and the woodwork is beautifully done.

Safari front windows to let in the breeze and that classic split screen Bus dash and cockpit.

Shoulder belts installed for safety up front

Retractable too!

New wiring and fuse block with standard glass fuses.

The factory "M Code" tag is present.
Built December 22nd 1959
Option code 183 shows this was an original walk thru model
360 and 183 refer to US delivery specifications
Model 215 is the Panel Van with loading doors on both sides
and that is was originally delivered in blue.
Delivery code UP stands for Portland Oregon as its first destination after leaving the factory.

That is a great bunch of options that add up to a pretty rare Bus.
Its transformation from the working class hauler to the cruise-worthy camper you see here
are unique and uncommon as well.

Some great accessories such as the full length wood slat roof rack
and the safari front windshields.

Lowered stance with custom wheels and performance and safety upgrades.

The rearward cargo door on each side has been swapped out with a door from a passenger model
which allow for a single pop out window on each side.

The US spec bumpers with the over riders look great
and the small factory round taillights and small hatch are nice early details.

Its cleanly done and great colors.
The bullet front signals and high hinge cargo doors are also neat early details.

Disc brakes have been installed for safety

The underside is solid and quite clean

Rocker panels and jacking points look solid and strong.

Being a factory double door model, this has the "belly pans"
that one normally associates with the sunroof deluxe models.

These panels not only provide added strength for the double side openings
but also offer another later of protection and sound deadening from the road.

Very solid and clean underneath.
The transmission has been swapped for a long axle unit that eliminates the stock
gear reduction boxes, so this can actually drive at freeway speeds.

Under the engine is also very clean and dry.

The paint and body are very clean and show well
but I would rate it at around a 7 out of 10.

There are some small fit and finish issues such as the door hinge here.
Works well with no issue, but that gap should not be as wide as it is
(Just me being picky I suppose, but worth mentioning)

Also looking close at the seams in the door jam it does appear that the front nose skin was replaced
at some point in its past.
It was well done, but if you know what you are looking at, you can see that there has been a little work done.

The big wood slat rack is awesome and the wood has been finished in a dark stain and varnish.

The passenger side rear corner bumper mount is a little wonky...but you need to look super close to see it.

The rear deck has been cut open to allow for easy access to the engine.
While not a factory thing, it was cleanly done and is a really awesome modification
when it comes to actually working on the engine and fuel tank.

While I could never bring myself to make that cut, any time I have had a chance to work on
one that has been modified this way, I absolutely dig it.

The lid fits nice and is insulated.
