The legendary Randy's Stuff Beetle Convertibles

The VW scene has been a colorful one and there have been many players in the game.
Back in the 80's when I first entered the scene I was like one big giant sponge soaking up
every bit of input on general knowledge about VWs as well as the latest style and fashion of the day.
I read every magazine,  attended every show and pretty quickly found my way into the So Cal scene.
While I never traveled far in those early days, I saw through the magazines that Southern California was
not the only place that some ground shaking customs were being built. In Colorado another fellow named
Randy was really making waves.  He owned a shop called Randy's Stuff (which obviously could never forget)
and his signature car, a chop top 66 convertible in Porsche raspberry was also unforgettable...and was a part of his company logo.

One thing that truly cemented this car into the brains of every VW nut was the month that it graced the cover
of BOTH, VW Trends and Hot VWs magazines.  This created a huge stir at both magazines, as they always
tried to feature vehicles each month that the other magazine had not yet featured and when everybody
realized that they had "worn the same dress" to the party, it forever changed their way of approaching
owners of cars to feature. From that point forward you simply had to choose sides...

Today Randy has moved from Colorado to Iowa, he shut down Randys Stuff many years ago
and slowly but surely he has been selling through his lifetime of creations and collections.
The time has come to sell the "logo car" as well as it's "brother", a full custom roadster Beetle
and we are thrilled that he chose Oldbug to be the place to market them.

Both cars are time capsules of the era. The Raspberry car was built in 1983
and remains just as it was when featured in the magazines and remains very clean and presentable.

The signature details on this that always stuck in my head were the chopped windowless top,
Porsche 356 taillights flipped vertical , and the smooth "W" decklid.

The suicide doors and shaved side windows just made the car so smooth it was like a dream.
The fact that the chopped to was fully functional was also a wild detail as most folks
went the easy route with a removable "Carson Top"...but not Randy.

Here is the car parked with the "Roadster" that Randy built in 1984
and the pairing of them could not be more period perfect in style and colors.

Back to the convertible, while the restoration has aged a little it still shows well.

Both cars are in running and driving condition but of the two, the Roadster has seen more
consistent use in recent years.

Such a cool ride...both of them really
but Ive gotta say the Randys Stuff "icon car" is pulling every one of my heartstrings
as it is just such a cool bit of VW history to those that were around the scene at the time.

So smooth, so clean, such amazing stance and style.
Its just so RAD!

Underneath the car remains quite clean.
At the time of the build the chassis was powder coated and features
IRS rear suspension and four wheel disc brakes.

The rear apron shows a notable flaw in a spot where the paintwork has lifted thanks to exhaust heat
but fortunately it is in an area that could be repaired without painting the whole car as long as you got the color right.

The engine is a 2180cc with big dual Weber carbs.
The trans has been beefed up with a super diff and close 3-4 gears.

Polished Porsche alloy wheels have been a staple of the scene forever,,,so cool.

Nice pinstripe detail

Chrome lugs as well

Interior is full custom by Mark Hannum (of Sewfine fame)

Still looks great

LeCarra steering wheel, smooth dash with single gauge

The smooth door tops and dash really give it a modern feel and the color matched details on the door panels
tie it all together so well.

Its really an awesome ride...I am trying to figure out how I could possibly justify having it for myself
but I just dont think its in the cards, especially since Randy is hoping to sell both cars to one buyer.
I just dont have the space or the coin for the pair.

And what a pair it is!

Now lets get into the Roadster and learn all its story.
This car did not get the press coverage that the Raspberry car got, mostly because the folks at the magazine
were so ticked off that they both got screwed out of an exclusive, that I think they just turned their noses at it.

Its a big shame as the car was so deserving of the feature, not only in quality but also in style.
In more recent years the "Volksrod" scene exploded and there are a lot of fenderless custom Beetles out there
but in 1984 when this car was built, it was if it had dropped from space. Totally an outside the box build.

The engine in the roadster is a 1914 cc with dual Kadron carbs
The trans also features a super diff and modified gearing to account for the taller rear tires.

The car runs and drives well, very strong

This was a full body off build with the IRS chassis powder coated and four wheel disc brakes.

The Halibrand wheels were made special to fit the factory bolt pattern, so no adapters.
The knoc off spinner centers come off to release the cap in the center.

And under that cap are the chrome lugs that hold the wheel in place.

The car is well detailed underneath...so grime from use as this one has
seen the road a bit over the past 35+ years.

A cool checkered nose bra has kept the hood in good shape

The fuel tank has a pretty low tech "gauge"

Ball joint front end

Nice pinstripe worl

Oh...and yes...this car started out as an actual 1956 Beetle convertible!
The Oval dash is the shocker in such a custom, but in 1984 the values of an Oval Vert were not what they are today!

Interior custom done by Sewfine.
Empi Bus shifter gives that Rat Fink hot rod feel

Rear seat deleted and a simple upholstered panel fitted for a smoth look.

Really nice interior

No top on this one, super smooth body with no trim or handles.

Hood and rear deck from a later model with the more squared off bottoms that flow nicely with the body reshaping.

Definitely a unique and historic ride from the era in its own right.

But together they are perfect bookends (bugends?)
While the goal here is to hopefully sell the as a pair if possible, offers will be entertained on the cars
individually and the seller does have a strong desire for a 2002-2003 VW Eurovan Weekender
if someone has one to offer as a partial trade.

Asking
$54,500 obo
for the pair.
(all reasonable offers considered)
