1974 VW "Wunderbug" For Sale

This 1974 Beetle is a bit "special".
As you can see it is a bit different than the normal Beetle...the grille and hood are definitely not
"factory", but on this particular car, the modifications were reportedly done at the dealership when new!
As the story goes...in 74 the Beetle sales were slowing as the Japanese cars were pullong a lot of sales away.
VW and the dealer network did all sorts of things to try to bring customers back on the lot.
Special editions such as the "Sun Bug", Le Grande editions, etc...were factory backed
but some enterprising dealers took it on themselves to dress up a few cars.

The "Wunderbug" conversion was a kit sold by Lieffring Industries in Missouri
and it consisted of a new hood and side panels that gave the Beetle the look of a 1937 Ford.
These parts were of very high quality compared to some of the other kits out there and really looked
like a part of the car rather than something tacked on if the install was done right.

The factory front fenders and bumper were retained and only the center section re-worked.
The hood being just the top flat panel that opens rather than the grille and everything coming up
like with other similar kits.

The car was sold new in Ohio and the original owner moved out to Colorado not long after.
It was purchased from the original owner by the current owners in 1989 and they have had it as
a driver ever since.  In 2000 they went wild with it and gave it a very nice quality restoration inside and out.
It has been pampered and cared for since and still looks very fresh and pretty.

The paint and body are excellent and it looks super clean

The factory "sport" wheels have been nicely restored and are wrapped with excellent tires.
All the rubber and trim are in nice shape.

The car was a daily driver before the restoration and now comes out of the garage to play just a couple times a month.
It has always been an operational car and has been very well maintained and religiously serviced.

There are a few light scracthes in the chrome on the bumpers by the seller's admission, and the odometer stopped working
at some point. Ditto on the fuel gauge.
It is an excellent driver though and has always been reliable for them.

Nice looking Beetle

The 1600cc dual port engine is the original and has been serviced, but not rebuilt.
Many parts were replaced in 2000 such a the carburetor and fuel pump, the exhaust and heat exchangers as well were done.
It is all stock and runs well.

Under the front hood you can see the original orange paint color of the car, I must say the yellow looks much
more fitting with the vintage style hood.
Original jack and tool kit are present.

The interior is in very nice shape.
Wood trimmed glove box door and shifter.
The dash pad has never been cut for a radio, it all looks very clean.

Back seat as well looks great

These ladybug floor mats are a slick vintage item. These are still made today but the originals like these have totally different coloring.
The factory rubber mats are below and the carpet is all in great shape.

Seat belts in all seating locations

Excellent

The hedliner looks nice and clean and tight.

Excellent

The wheels all have the proper lug covers and center caps.

The chassis is all original and fantastically solid.

Still the factory undercoat under here...this is a super solid car.

Under the engine is a bit grimy and gunky from years of use.

Exhaust is solid and tight.

Window rubbers are all in good shape as is the glass.

Taillight lenses look very good

Wunderbug!!

So fun!

The odometer stopped around the time of the restoration.
The car has been driven quite minimally since.
The actual mileage is not documented.

Looking at the pedals and other clues...I would think the mileage is not far off.

In closing this is a very fun and unique Beetle that underneath is a very solid and honest two owner car.
Great history behind it and it will be a conversation starter no matter where you go.
The cosmetics are really sharp... I would drive the wheels off this one.
You certainly wont lose it in the parking lot...or at the car shows for that matter!
You will be the only one with a Wunderbug!!
