1971 VW Westfalia Campmobile For Sale
SOLD

This Southern California based pop top Westy is a pretty awesome rig.
At first glance it appears to be just another worn out camper, but
underneath that
less than glitzy image, is a purpose built adventure wagon and one of
the straightest most solid
early Bay Westies I have seen in years!

The Bus has been in California its whole life and while the paint is
faded, the metal underneath
is extremely sound and straight. The current owner, a seasoned VW
mechanic, has gone through this
Bus from end to end to make it a super reliable travel machine with
mild performance upgrades that give it
the power one needs to keep up with the fast paced world of today.

Stock height but boosted up just a bit with 15" wheels and all terrain
tires, this Bus is quite
nimble on the dirt trails as well as a great runner on the highway.

The pop top canvas has been replaced and the top works well.

The engine is a well trained monster, originally built by Pauter,
and recently gone through again with fresh bearings and fully tuned.
2138cc long stroke, chevy rods, counterweight crankshaft
dual 45 dellorto carbs, full flowed, deep sump, oil filter, extra
oil cooler...
and transmission fully built to handle the power with everything
reinforced with long fourth gear for highway flying!
It runs and drives fantastic and pulls the hills like no other pop top
I have ever been in.
It runs cool in all weather situations and the owner says he would not
be
afraid to hop in the Bus and drive it cross country.

The exterior being a little shabby is actually perfect for a good
adventure.
It is not so nice you would be afraid to park it somewhere and if you
get stone chips or scratches along the way
it all adds to the character! It would be a great basis to
restore as well if you wanted a shiny one!

The original camper bits are all present and accounted for.
Not perfect but functional!

Original flooring in pretty impressive shape!

Clean title and currect registration

Cabinetry is all original.
Side panels and headliner panels are new.

Bed folds out into a nice comfy sleeping space.

Here are a couple more engine shots.
These Dellorto carbs are great runners!

Electric fuel pump and pressure regulator.
The seams and any slight air gaps in the engine tins have been sealed
with a metal tape. Not pretty, but this greatly helps with cooling!

Recent battery

Back inside everything is pretty basic, but functional

The original pads are a little worn under the Mexican blanket, but they
are holding up
and are super comfortable.

Auxillary gauges are mounted on top of the dash so you can check the
vital functions along the road.

The best part about this Bus other than the mechanicals is the super
solid body!
Check out this front floor! Awesome!

And the most important camping accessory...the Burgermeister Beer
bottle opener!

The jump seat is here along with the camp stool

The fold up table is here and working as well

Nice coco mats up front!

Front seats are firm and are fitted with very comfy sheepskin seat
covers.
(trust me on this...FAR more comfy on a hot drive than the vinyl!

The dash is in nice overall condition.

The camp stool is an item that is often missing from these Westfalias

All the original body tags are in place on the Bus.

Door panels are clean.
Speakers in the panel are hooked to a modern audio unit hidden in the
glove box.

Steering wheel shows a little wear and a couple cracks and chips at the
hub.

The closet is a great place for storing your tuxedo and is also a
favorite
spot for small kids to climb in and hide

The sink is present but the water tank is not currently hooked up.

Hop on in and see the world!

Man this Bus is SOLID!

The al; terrain taires are a tight fit but that really help with any
adventures off the paved road
and the taller profile makes for a higher top speed and improved
highway mileage.

Even the drivers side front floor is super solid...just a wee bit of
surface corrosion at the back edge here.

Crank out side windows are functional

Rock solid rockers!

M code tag

Odometer reads 1457 miles...I am assuming it has turned over once.

Original decals all still in the door jam

This is an early 71 model, built in August 1970.

Love the coco mats.

The nose features a spare tire mount if you wanted to get the spare out
of the back
and have a bit more sleeping room.

Locking gas cap

Under the blanket in back you can see the original mustard vinyl.
A couple of flaws in it but the foam is holding up great and it is
super comfy.

Headache shelf is a great storage spot for blankets and such.

These rockers...man oh man!

The kids cot that slips over the front seats is even here!

The Bus has some character.
Certainly you could put on a fresh coat of paint and it would be
prettier
but I like the mild patina and the "dont care" durability of it.
Just go, and enjoy!

Nose is fantastic on this Bus.

Under the windsield is rock solid as well.

This is a very common spot for rust to occur...but not on this one!!

71 is a fantastic year for the VW Bus..the last year for the upright
type 1 engine and the upgraded
power assist front brakes are a major improvement over the previos
years.
In 72 the engine changed and became a little less easy to service and
such.

Paint the map of the US on the side and color in the states as you
cross them.
This is a perfect Bus to fly in and drive home!

Here is a quick under engine shot...super sanitary!

Pop top canvas is great

Modern audio hidden in the glove box is a wise idea
if you park and hike or hit the waves.
Out of sight is out of mind for anyone looking for a quick grab!

These big pop tops are so cool to camp and hang out in.

The fold out cot up top is a great space to sleep and peek at the stars.

Dont forget the kids cot that goes over the front seats...get the whole
family in on the adventure.

In closing this is really a great Bus.
I would love to see someone buy it and take it on a big adventure.
That performance motor is a valuable bit in its own right and the owner
would be open to discounting the price
quite a bit if he keeps it...but as the Bus is, it is ready to go and
play with.
