This Indiana based Beetle is in need of some love, but
it is a desirable split window car with the beloved "crotch coolers"
so I am certain someone out there will see the promise in this one and
dive in to bring it back to glory.
Left the assembly line in July of 1952 destined for New York,
so if you are a VW historian on these matters...this is what they call a
"Hoffmann Car". Prior to 1955, New York auto importer
Max Hoffmann handled the flow of VWs into the US (Porsche as well and other brands).
In 55 VW set up shop in the US to handle it all themselves, but it has been said that
without the effort and influence of Hoffmann, that perhaps the VW would have never made
the huge splash it did here in America.
This one has seen some action and a fair bit of neglect
but it looks like a pretty decent start if you hold that desire to restore a split window car.
Not bad in the back corners
Missing the drivers side front fender and it looks like the mounting bolt holes have let loose.
Original rear fenders and taillights
The taillight housing is here, early wire type wipers and the "Popes nose"
Quarter panels look decent
Broken hinge on the deck lid
Luggage area looks fine
Floor pans need replacing
Ashtray
A little blow through on the passenger side rear corner
Body overall seems pretty straight.
Broken door glass and no windshield
16" wheels
All tags and numbers are present and match up.
Spare tire well looks solid
Has a transmission but no engine
Big cap fuel tank
Crotch coolers still function
No semaphores sadly, but they are being reproduced these days
Chassis number
Some signs of past welding on the rear bumper support
Crusty but I have certainly seen worse!
Drivers side floor pan could possibly be saved
Dash pod detail
Heater channel is rusty for sure
Dash is in nice shape
The clock is included as is the panel that surrounds it.
Bat wing steering wheel
Battery area has rusted through
Drivers side quarter panel has some rust on the lower edge
Front seats are present...rear seat is missing at the moment (owner is hunting for it)
Split case trans
Jack
Hood is not the original but seems to fit decently
11 C Export Limousine and an original US delivery car...pretty rare.
Clock pod
Hood is at least a four tab hood, but not an original split era panel.
She's a project for sure but a pretty decent basis to build from.
Finding a Split in any condition these days seems to be a challenge.
Values are climbing on the early cars...projects like this are the cheapest
way into that level of the scene.
