1973 VW "Sports Bug" For Sale
SOLD!!

This 1973 VW Super Beetle is a pretty rare find.
Sure...VW made a ton of cars in 73, but this one was a bit of a rarity even when new.
This is a "Sports Bug".

This example is located in Southern California and is a nice clean driver quality car.
Its not restored to over the top levels or anything but it is a truly great runner and as you can see,
it has a lot of curb appeal just as it sits.

The paintwork was redone a while back and it was repainted in the original
Marathon Blue paint color.

Fun car and a pleasing color.

The Sports Bug was a limited edition release with a host of special details that were not seen on other Beetles.
The special seats, wheels and steering wheel were major components, the blacked out bumpers and trim were another detail.
A graphic stripe was also available as a part of the package but I dont think all Sports Bugs got it.

There were just two colors offered for the Sports Bug, the bright yellow and the
"Scintillating Marathon Metallic"
The advertising for the model was hilarious!

The "positively sensual" original Sports Bug steering wheel is here and in nice shape.

The original sports seats have been redone with cloth centers just like the original.

Rear seat done to match.

Under the front hood is un-restored, yet pretty clean.
The current paint finish is the second respray, the first being done in the more teal tone visible
on the apron here.

Matching spare wheel in the tire well.
The wheels on the Sports Bug are much wider than the standard Beetle wheel.

Spare tire well is clean and rust free.

There are a few chips and scratches here and there on the body.
Nothing major, but they are there.

Fender edges where the accessory gravel guards would fit, have been sprayed with a durable finish.
It might be fun to source a set of the original gravel guards that were offered in black and fit them.

The black trimming looks great.

Small bump on the passenger rear fender.

Underside of the car is quite solid and is untouched original.

No signs of an wrecks or repairs.

Good looking car!

Original paint code tag is still present

Excellent Continental tires on the restored wheels...looks fantastic.

Body overall is nice and straight.

Speaker panels on the front under the dash.

Odometer reads 54k miles.

Chassis looks solid.

Apron and bumper are nice and clean

Headliner is the original and it is showing some age and light damage.

New rubber floor mats as well as some nice coco mats.

Door panels in good shape.

More underbelly shots...
All in good shape under here.

One patch under the battery at some point but otherwise very good.
I like that the owner left this alone so that you can see exactly what is under here
rather than blasting it with undercoating.
Certainly undercoating would be a wise thing to help protect it in the future and it would
make it look cleaner under here...but from a buyers point of view it is really
nice to see exactly what you are getting .

Modern radio

Fantastic rubber

Gas door

I love those sports seats!

More headliner detail

Headlight rings should be black like the bumpers to complete the look.

A little wear to the wheel, but it is the original and they are very comfy in your hands.

Subwoofer speaker in the back area. Original carpet back here as well.
Obviously aged and pulling back a bit.

The engine has a bit of road grime underneath.
The owner does not have any records on the history of the engine and how many miles are on it
but he states that it really runs fantastic.
The car made the trip to California from Washington state not long ago and it performed flawlessly.

The wheels have all the black lug nut covers in place as well as the correct center caps.

Dash looks nice

Out in the California sun and cruising the coast.

Clean title and current tags.

Engine runs like a top and is quite stock.
The only thing I spy here that is not original is the mechanical advance distributor.

Original paint finish under the lid.

No show car under the hood, but it is all in place as it should be and is a solid runner.

One last walk around as I close up the details on this car.
Its a good one, and a great model. I like it.

Its a great choice for someone that wants a unique Beetle to run around in. There are a few things that could be done that would
improve on it when it comes to some details and the interior, but it is a fantastic car just as it is.

The Sports Bug is a bit of a rarity.
They simply do not surface often on the market today and as time goes on
I can see these being highly prized by collectors.
