1974 Limited Edition Sun Bug

In the 70s when the Japanese carmakers were making inroads into the sales of our beloved Beetle,
Volkswagen started to look at ways to make the Beetle more special, and there were several different Limited Edition
versions that were produced to hopefully spark up the interest in the car buying people out there.
These limited edition Beetles are now being searched out by collectors and I think that over time
they will truly be highly prized and the vlues will increase due to their special equipment.
With that being said, what we have here is he nicest example of a "Sun Bug" that I have ever seen.
Not only is it the nicest one Ive ever seen, it also comes with an amazing history and is still in the hands of it's
original California owner and retains a phenomenal pile of original paperwork and literature.
This is a car to grab quick and hold on to.

As you can see the car has a showroom fresh appearance.
It really looks great. The car was restored by the original owner's son a few years ago
and I must say I am impressed with his workmanship and eye for detail...nice work indeed.

Here's the jewel in this Beetle's crown, the original plastic Sun Bug emblem.
These were made of a pretty fragile plastic and are often gone, and with many Sun Bugs they werent even installed.
Apparantly it was up to the dealer to put them on...so basically it's a pretty darn rare emblem and since the car has been
garaged it's whole life it is in pretty nice shape (one crack on the "s")

Here's the original sales brochure for the Sun Bug.
The Sun Bug was made in Convertible or Sunroof Sedan versions.

Inside the brochure there was the music and lyrics to a special song written about the car...gotta love that.

The brochure shows in detail all the special things that make a Sun Bug a Sun Bug.

The back of the brochure.
Now this was apparantly a US only release, not something seen in Europe.

Here is the original window sticker for this car showing the original equipment and the Limited Edition
Sun Bug name and such, all of which matches this car too...so it is fully documented as an original Sun Bug.

Original owners manuals and everything.

Thick file of service receipts for the life of the car.

Many of the earlier receipts are Volkswagen Dealer service.

Here is the birth certificate from Germany showing the production date of the car.

Here's another letter from Germany about the Sun Bug model and that it was a US version.
Apparantly in 84 there was a "Sunny Bug" version made by VW for the European market
but it was significantly different.

Here's the best part of the story in my eyes...the car has only had one owner.
Here is a photo of him with the car when it was brand new.

And here's a photo of him today...this car has a special place in this owner's heart.
Its gotta go to a good home where it will be prized and treated with the same attention and affection
that it has recived since 1974.

And while we are on the history of the car, here is a photo of it prior to the restoration in
1998. As you can see it was pretty cherry then, but the paint was fading off the roof
and the interior was looking a bit sad...but a dreamy virgin car to start with.

And here it is in all it's glory with the restoration completed.
The work was done around 1998 and it was a pretty extensive restoration. The car was
dis-assembled to a rolling shell, all parts carefully sorted and tagged and a high quality paint job
applied inside and out in the original Harvest Gold (L99) color.
The car was then carefully re-assembled with using as much of the original parts as possible
and all new top quality replacements when the originals were worn.

The chrome shines brightly, the fit and finish to the body is very good indeed.
Very glassy smooth paintwork too...really looks like it rolled off the showroom floor yesterday.

The original Sport wheels are in great shape, tires are good all the way around.

Very straight and smooth down the sides.

All new window rubber and trim.

Factory sunroof with wind deflector were cleaned and detailed like crazy.

"
Excellent work.

The rear end is also clean and proper.

Another photo of the Sun Bug emblem.

Original blue California plates have been on the car since new!

Very clean engine compartment and all the proper equipment is in place.

1600cc dual port engine has been nicely detailed and runs excellent.
The car is a delightful driver, just turn the key and go anywhere.

Nice paint detailing even under the decklid...I love it when I see a car done like this.

Pretty clean and dry under the engine, no big oil leaks or issues.
Factory heater is hooked up and functional.

Super solid original floor pans...no welding ever.

Heater channels are super solid as well.

The factory undercoat is still in place.

Solid!

The inner fender wells are also very solid indeed.
Its garaged California life has done it well.

Front fender wells also are excellent.

No signs of any collision damage or anything questionable.

She's a beauty!

Super straight, good clean reflection in the bodywork.

Paintwork nicely done inside the gas door too.

Very nice stainless accessory door edge guards.

Interior is pretty much spotless.

The brown color and materials in here are correct for the Sun Bug and all are in excellent condition.

Brown carpet is correct as well. Great accessory Coco mats look phenomenal in here.

The original Sun Bug gear shift knob...sorry for the glare, it is yellow with the black sun logo
and it's in great shape.

The sport steering wheel was another special equipment part for the Sun Bug.
Its soft and padded unlike the standard production cars that had the hard plastic wheel.

Odometer reads 18,529 miles. Actual mileage on the car i knda unknown.
The original odometer broke way back in the 80's and the owner didnt want to spend the $75 to repair it.
The speedometer still worked and at the time it just didnt seem to be a need to do kind of item, so it was left as is.
The service intervals were kept up based on time and they appear to be pretty complete.
At the time of the restoration the original speedometer was repaired and since the restoration
the car has roughly 3000 miles on it. Its in great shape indeed and it runs excellent.
There are receipts for an engine rebuild in the pile that was done several years ago...so the motor has tons of
life left in it.
Note the special rosewood dash trimming...another Sun Bug special item.

Originally the car was equipped with a Blaupunt radio that quit working some time during the car's life
(pretty early on according to the owner). It was replaced by this period AM/FM radio which still works great.

The dash is very clean.
The top has a cap on it that is extremely well fit, so it looks factory.

The seats were professionally redone in the correct brown vinyl with tan corduroy inserts.
They looks just like the photo in the sales brochure...a very good match.

Rear seat is excellent too.

A speaker box has been loosley fitted behind the rear seat...a little overkill for the AM/FM radio
but it does sound a lot better than just the single dash speaker. This can be easily removed to keep the
original look and feel of the interior.

Headliner is done in the proper smooth grade vinyl.

Nice fit and finish.

No noteable wear around the pedals.

The original production sticker was carefully masked off during the repaint.

Super super clean in the nooks and crannies.

Gorgeous eh?

Everything fits so nice in this car...a lot of time and effort went into getting everything
just so. Hats off to the owner's son for an excellent job.

I noticed one itty bitty flaw in the upholstery under the passenger side seat back release...a tiny poke hole.

Door panels are excellent.

Another good pretty face shot for you.

Under the front hood is also very cleanly detailed.
The original cardboard trunk liner is gone but what lies below is so pretty it would
be a shame to cover it up with a new liner.

Super clean and straight, no accidents or damage repairs...just as it should be.

Paint quality in the trunk is also very very nice.
No overspray on the wires or anything like that...done very well indeed.

Original paint code tag.

Washer bottle.

Clean matching spare wheek and tire, windshield washer tank is connected with the proper hose.

Super clean front apron.

Under the front hood is also showroom shiny.

Good and straight under the bumper as well.
These grille sections often got damaged.

Turn signal lenses.

the proper body trim.

Another shot of the super clean sunroof.
The sunroof operates smoothly by the way.

Here's a tiny paint flaw in the rain gutter on the passenger side.

Here is the biggest flaw in the body, a little rust bubbling going on.
This is a very common spot of these Super Beetles and fortunately with fresh paint like this it wouldnt
be a difficult repair to bring it back to perfect.

All the window glass is excellent, all new window rubber too.

Sunroof seals well.

So there you have it.
Its gotta be the nicest Sun Bug out there and with the phenomenal history and paperwork
it will surely be a prime addition to any VW collection.
