1965 VW 21 Window Microbus Project For Sale

A lot of the vehicles we list on Oldbug are already restored and super cherry.
That is fine I suppose but I like to offer all ends of the spectrum if possible because not everybody can afford
one that is all done and sweet...and that holds true big time with a 21 window Bus.
The market for these has just plain gone through the roof in recent years and they have become
the play toys of the rich boys with price tags to match.
That is all good in the big scheme of things I suppose but for those of us that probably wont ever have
100k of "play money" to throw around it puts them out of reach...

Unless...you build one yourself!

This 1965 model Deluxe Sunroof Microbus is one that is pretty affordable.
Yes...it need a lot of work, but in the end you are going to have a jewel on your hands.
It is a fun project and a wise investment.
Put your money in the stock market?  Bahh!!

This one has been in the current owners hands for quite some time.
In fact he has had it for about 18 years now and it is a project that he just does not have the time
to complete...so here it is for sale in it's un-finished state.

It is located on the East Coast of the US, not far from New York City.
It has been on the east coast it's whole life, being sold new at Shrewsbury VW in New Jersey.
It appears to be mostly original paint which is kinda cool so what you see is what you get.
The owner has pulled it all apart too and photographed every inch of it
so you can see exactly what you are up against restoration wise.

From some angles it looks pretty sweet...
you could imagine polishing up this side and popping the windows back in and having a cool patina-driver
but as we look closer you will see that it needs more than that.

But as a basis for a restoration...it is a good start.
Its a desirable model and a good year, and it has the walk thru front seats which is a big bonus desirability wise.

It doesnt take much imagination to picture this all shiny and beautiful and out in the sun.
But it is going to take some time, money and skill to make that vision a reality.
But it is well worth pursuing!

Now the owner has taken all the parts for the Bus and put them in wood crates.
He has also aquired a pretty nice stash of spare parts for the Bus as well as other VW
models from a VW shop that closed down in his area.
He is selling everything as one big package...he wont split out the parts
(so dont ask please)
and while many of them will not fit this Bus, they do add some trading value and an opportunity
to make back a little bit of the investment with the resale of them.

The other thing that is really nice about his approach is that during the dissassembly he kept EVERYTHING!
so even used rubber and rusty metal that was trimmed off was retained.
So often people dont think and throw away stuff that is hard to replace...oh sure...some of it is trash
but some of it is trreasure too.

Original flooring material..

Headliner and bows.

Some of the spare parts

That air cleaner is for a 67 Beetle...not workable for this project but pop that baby on ebay and watch it go!

There is quite a bit of replacement sheet metal that comes with the Bus to help with the rust repairs.

This is new stuff that you will certainly use.

The prices of these parts adds up fast if you need to buy them seperately!

That Beetle horn ring is another resale item that will bring in a few bucks!

The engine that was in the Bus was pulled apart and the bits are all in the boxes...

Rear bumper parts.

The very hard to find aluminum Deluxe bumper trims are here!

Nice original radio

Heads and seat clamps

More

Deluxe body trims and jailbars.

Front bumper blade

Hippies in an old VW Bus?

Check out the original dealer sticker on the engine lid...cool!

Now lets get to the Bus body itself.
The passenger side rear quarter panel has been replaced and needs finishing.

You can see the welds for the replacement...hidden under where the body trim will go, which is nice.

Still needing some metal work along the bottom but it looks like the main
part of the replacement is done pretty well.

The walk thru front seats are a great option that folks are always looking for!
Dash looks clean and un-modified.

Sunroof assembly is present and looks to be complete...even the handle is here.

original rear seat is here along with its luggage bar.
The rear cargo mat is nicely wrapped up and the original salt and pepper door cards are all here.

The floor in back looks pretty good I must say!!

There is some rust in the overhang on the roof as you can see

This will require some skilled metal work.

There are some crusty bits below of course with it's east coast haritage but it all looks do-able for sure.

The rocker panel has been trimmed away on the passenger side as you can see...

New inner rocker fitted...ready for the outer.

Door bottoms will need some love.

Some rust along the top of the door opening on the passenger side front.

Those original door panels look pretty nice!
Nice to see that trim panel for under the rear seat as well...that is one rare part these days.

Some floor repair done...just a bit more left to do.

Check out that the original aluminum trim rings are on the wheels in these photos...
These babies are seriously hard to find these days!!

Rear deck looks pretty solid.

New corner fit looks pretty well done.

Original paint in that engine room is nice!

What have we here?
Some new pistons and cylinders?
Cool...there's one more part off the shopping list!

Proper good stuff too...not the Brazil or China junk!

Lug bolts...lots of them

Rubber dealies

Handles

More parts!

Springs (and a few hubcap pullers!)

???

Do you see the light?

Some earlier Bus parts in here too!!
(remember guys...this all goes together...dont be emailing me on that third brakelight deal on the left!)

Beetle bits

A whole bunch of electrical parts...turn signal switches and all sorts of "gold".

Back to the Bus...under the front windows looks pretty decent.

A few small rust holes in the front of the roof.

Nothing major though which is good.

Looks like perhaps a little filler in the nose from a slight tap in it's past.

Drivers side rocker cut out and ready for the replacement  metal

Viewing window for road kill inspection.

OK...I think you have seen enough photos...or at least I posted all I have.
It looks like a good project. The center seat seems to be the only missing major part.
But for the most part the rest of it appears to be pretty much all there and with the bonus extra
parts you should be able to clear enough from their sale to buy whatever parts you cant find in the boxes for the Van.
Its not a project for the faint of heart...it is going to take some time and attention and som money as well
but in the end you will have a very valueable and desirable Bus...the dream car of oh so many!
