The original owner of this car was one of those sorts of people that
cared for their
vehicle beyond most. In fact it was his daily driver up until the year
he passed away...1982.
The car went into storage at that point and say in the barn, out of the
elements until the current owner bought it.

I love these notes...whenever I have come across a car like this there
is a sense of history that really
give it an amazing feeling. I love old stuff, any old stuff, and
something that you can sense the history of
is always more appealing than something that you cant.

Oh the stories this car could tell if it could talk... well with these
treasures that were found in the glove box
...the car can tell some stories. and I think that is awesome!!

To finish up the history documentation we come to present day receipts
for work that the current owner has done to the car to bring it back up
to
its former glory while preserving as much of its history as possible.

Here is the car today in the owner's Rhode Island yard.
The car has always been in New England since new.
The current (2nd) got ahold of it a year ago and gave it some
needed love.
The one thing it suprisingly didnt need, was much rust repair.
The car was kept out of the elements for most of its life and the only
areas needing any attention were in the fender wells.
The floorpans and heater channels were solid and needed no repair!

The color is the original color to the car, and 90% of what you see
here is original paint!!!
The body is very straight and sound.
It has a couple stone chips if you look close and perhaps a ding or two
but the overall appearance is super clean.

Under the back seat is very clean and solid.
The body was removed from the chassis during the repaint and the pan
was painted back to black to keep it nice.

Not rusty in the corners or anything...it was a true survivor.

The interior of the car was left totally as found and just cleaned and
preserved.
Here you can see the origina horse hair padding in the seat and the
factory inspector tag stuck under the springs.

Cool

Here at the indide edge of the heater channel in the back you can see
it was (and still is) a very solid example.

Nice.

Bottom side of the pans were cleaned and treated and resprayed in black.
No floor welding was needed, just a wee bit in each fender well.

Body is very straight and smooth...never wrecked or repaired.

As many original details as possible were kept during the re-do.
The fender beading is actually the original stuff...just cleaned and
redone.
Running boards are originals as well but they were sprayed in black at
some point in time.

Nice effort to preserve original details such as this service sticker.

The window rubbers are all original and show some age, but what is neat
about these details is that
they tell the story further. The car has a totally "original" feel to
it when you walk around it.

Nice to see clean original stuff like the hardware and such.

Having the nice new paint under the mats is nice to see.

But on top of the mat it all looks untouched and original.

Door strikers are decently clean.

Handles and panels all look proper and clean.

Behind the bumpers look reasonably tidy.
These are good German bumpers too.

Hood latch has been sprayed black...it would have been natural metal
original.

Paint quality is very nice...not flawless, but nice.
Considering that 90% of the paint is original finish...it is impressive.

Some rubber splitting but original and it shows!

Nice to see the original rubber dealies under the hood emblem...these
are details that are so often lost during a restoration.

Fuel tank is original finish.

Remnants of the original tool kit remain.

It looks like there may have been a little respray work done
under the hood...it looks mighty clean!

Looks nice eh?

Original paint on the spare wheel.

Now the interior is all original...except for the front seats
which are actually from a 66-67 Beetle.
The owner has some original 62 seats that need to be re-upholstered,
but he has not done this yet
preferring to leave the seats that were in it when he got it in place.
If the car were mine I would redo the original seats in the proper
material and roll with that...leave the rest as is.

Nice to see original carpets and mats all intact.
With a little effort this would all clean up even nicer!

The all red seats are pretty rare actually so I bet you could resell
them to some guy with a
66 that had this style in place and raise the funds to re-upholster the
proper front seats for the car.

The thresholds were re-touched when the exterior was dealt with...I spy
a little overspray on the windlace rubber near the bottom...

Tha paint on the dash is original and untouched and really looks
awesome.
I like the original parcel tray as well.

Original glass was retained.

Original mirror and antenna too

The fenderwells were resprayed and look good.

The original German gravel guards are awesome.

Some fade to the chrome on the original bumpers but still shiny.

Headlights are original as well.

Here is a good underside shot...she's clean under the skirt!!

Looks like the rear bumper mount was repaired or replaced...that weld
does not look factory,
but you would have to be a wild purist nutcase like myself to point
this out.

Im amazed at how solid this car is for being an east coast car!!

There ya go...drivers side bumper mount looks like it should!

Headliner is all original.
Note that this has the vinyl material on the posts and the cloth
material in the center...this is the way it was done at the factory.
I often see cars redone incorrectly with this sort of stuff.

The original dome light even works!!

And it is the proper silver trimmed Hella unit...

Visors look great.
Yes that original mohair headliner has darkened a lot with age...but
that is what time does to natural materials like that.

Instruments and steering wheel are excellent.
The odometer shows 16,000 miles...the actual documented mileage is 116k
since new.
The gas records and such run from about 40k miles up until the
114k...current owner has put 2000 miles on it.

The headliner has aged in a very interesting way...it almost looks like
some old natural cow hide or something...kida neat.
No rips or damage...just age.

The seam at the top of the back seat has split open, but a skilled
upholsterer should be able to repair this and re-stitch it.

Seat bottom looks excellent.

I love seeing the original rugs in these cars...even if they are aged a
little like this.

Great original untouched dashboard!!
Check out the compass in the middle...too cool!!

You can see if you look super close, a little paint touch up in the
corner here... but anything done was kept to a minimum.

Solid.

Super clean hinges

Original paint wheels with trim rings!

One small ding

Nice

The engine was all rebuilt but is the original one to the car,
true "numbers matching" stuff.

The engine looks very properly original and quite clean.
The carburator has been rebuilt as well but there is a bit of a flat
spot on accelleration
Another mechanical issue it has is some play in the steering which the
owner attributes to the steering box.

Original dealer badge !!

Original German Hella lenses!

Great looking car with a wonderful history and a great untouched
originality to it.

So pretty.

Here are the early seats the owner has for it.

The owner kept all parts that were removed or replaced when done.
It all goes with the car to the new owner.

Another pair of original paint front fenders is also included in the
sale!

Nice!

Battery cover

Original cylinder heads were kept...rebuilt ones are in the car now.

Awesome untouched wiring and back of the dash!!

Never hit front or back...wonderful.

Looks like drivers rear wheel is missing the trim ring...

Early Sapphire 1 radio.

Owners manual included.

Wonderful car.

Here is a photo of the floorpan when out from under the car...
Engine tins were all repainted as well.

Yummy

Inspection sticker from the last time it was on the road in 1982.
Now it is fully re-comissioned and ready to roll.
In closing this is a great car.
It is a very rare thing to find one this original and in this shape on
the East Coast of the US
(well really anywhere...) it has been very well preserved and the work
done to bring it back to life
was very well done and now it should be good to go for the next 50
years!
